I loved how each chapter of the Bible was explained in detail. Well written and enjoyed the quotes that were given.

i really liked this. It takes and puts the bible in understandable language. I liked it. It explains difficult words and phrases and puts them into sentences that is modern day english to help with understanding some of things that were difficult to understand.

Very informative, taught me things I never knew. Great for understanding the Old and New Testaments.

Although there is a table of contents with page numbers listed, the individual pages are not numbered so it is very frustrating trying to find what you're looking for!!! I like the content though.

Very good overview to help you understand at a high level the flow of the Bible

My intention was to see if it addressed the many mistakes my friends and I made, and to see it it was good enough to give to younger friends and family members.Having never received "the talk," I feel this short, easy-to-read book provides far more information in a clear, concise, no-nonsense format than any ten minute talk my father could have given me.The life principles Andy teaches are brilliant in their simplicity. The book has Christian overtones, but the information can be applied in anyone's life regardless of religious beliefs and age.I would highly recommend buying this book for your kids when they are junior high school age or more. Ideally, the children and parent(s) should both read it and discuss it. Some of the concepts require a little more maturity to understand, so the children should simply put the book on a shelf and read it (and discuss it) once a year until they understand the information.This book is also excellent for older single and divorced men and women, who have made some relationship mistakes, want a fresh start, and wish to avoid making as many relationship mistakes as possible.I highly recommend this book. It can change your life and save you or your children from making some fairly basic and completely avoidable relationship mistakes.

Some blame the pill; some blame the feminists; some blame the media. Whatever the reason, the irony is that the emotional and financial costs of broken relationships have never been higher.In his new book, The New Rules for Love, Sex, and Dating, Andy Stanley writes:“I’m not all that interested in why things are the way they are. I’m more interested in helping you navigate the way things are. My purpose in writing is to increase your relational satisfaction” (14).Fair enough. But then Stanley then goes on to offer a rather rare insight:“I’ve met with many struggling married couples who would describe themselves as having ‘marriage problems.’ But in all my years I’ve never talked to a married couple that actually had a marriage problem. What I have discovered is that people with problems get married and their problems collide. What was manageable as a single person eventually becomes unmanageable within the context of marriage” (20).Wow. This is getting down to brass tacks! Instead of looking for that perfect person to solve all your problems, Stanley says—hey, look in the mirror![1]Andy Stanley is a pastor who does not sound or write like a pastor. He describes himself as a communicator, author, and pastor and founder of North Point Ministries in Atlanta, Georgia. His book is written in 10 chapters, including:1. The Right Person Myth;2. Commitment is Overrated;3. Becoming the Right Person;4. So Becoming;5. Love Is;6. Gentleman’s Club;7. The Way Forward;8. The Talk;9. Designer Sex; and10. If I were You (7-8).These chapters are preceded by acknowledgments and an introduction. They are followed by conclusions, notes, and a small group discussion guide. A DVD video study is also available.This is a book filled with a lot of wisdom. For example, Stanley’s discussion of 1 Corinthians 13 in chapter 5 is priceless—he describes it as your list of suggestions on becoming the person that you would want to meet (76). One item on this list is patience: Love is patient (1 Cor 13:4). Stanley notes that impatience is an emotion, not a decision, and it does not come naturally. We all have a natural pace and get angry when others don’t go along. Stanley explains that love means deferring to someone else to set the pace—in time, space, and margin just as much as they need (79).The cliff notes version of Stanley’s advice is found in chapter 10 which he describes as the “hard sell”.Stanley knows his audience. He starts this chapter by repeating a challenge that he made earlier: “Beginning today, take a year off from all romantic and sexual pursuits” (170). This is the hard sell part. Psychiatrists tell us that addictions are forever—abstinence is the only prescription that truly works. Bad habits take two weeks to break—bad sexual habits fall somewhere in-between. While this might sound like a high price to pay for moral clarity, but the life you save may be your own[2].Stanley suggests that you spend this year proactively doing some important things to become the sort of person that the person you want to meet would find attractive. He has 5 suggestions:1. Address your past—face up to your issues;2. Break some bad habits (substance abuse, bad attitudes, poor fashion choices…);3. Set some standards—how far is too far?4. Get out of Debt—don’t expect to dump debt on a potential spouse; and5. Go (back) to church—hang out in the right place (172).Remember the mirror mentioned earlier? You cannot change someone else but you can work on becoming someone they might actually want to get to know.This is not a preachy book, but it is an in-your-face book. Although my wife, Maryam, and I have been married for 30 years, I was already 30 when I got married. This implies that I was single for a long time. Reading Stanley’s book back then would have saved me a lot of pain. Go for it. Read it. Take it seriously. Save yourself a lot of pain.[1] Stanley writes: “ever purchase something from a big box retailer and open the box to find a card that reads something along these lines? If this product is defective or a piece is missing, do not return to the place of purchase. Instead, contact us at 1-800-ITS-YOUR-FAULT.” (59)[2] The leading cause of suicide among young people is a broken relationship.

I bought 3 copies. One for my single roommate, one for a girl that I was starting to date, and one for myself.My roommate loves it so far.I got to chapter 5 and stopped so I can read it at the same time as the girl I bought it for.The girl I'm dating read the whole book in one day. She said that she couldn't put it down. We plan on doing the book study provided in the back of the book together. But now I need to catch up and finish the book!I'd say if you're looking for guidance on this issue than you should buy this book. It's an easy read packed with lots of wisdom.

This book was pretty life changing. I read it with a friend of mine. We didn't have a formal discussion group, but we did chat about it a ton as we read through it. It was funny, truthful, hard and solid. I appreciate when someone doesn't sugar coat the topic. Like, love, sex and dating are all really tough to deal with as Christians. Andy Stanley doesn't insert strictly his opinions. He really speaks truth from the Bible to discuss these really uncomfortable and tough topics. I would loan it out to people, but I underlined and wrote things in there I'd be embarrassed to have others read just because he managed to really speak to me and my life.

As the wife of a youth pastor in a local community church, I highly recommend this book for all teenagers and single adults to read. Andy has very compelling arguments for his statements. Its a quick, easy read and will get you thinking about why you are dating, if you should be dating who you are dating, and what you should allow yourself to do while dating. If I had a teenager, I would pay him/her to read it. :)

I was truly moved by the historical portion of Ann Mah’s novel THE LOST VINTAGE and how it tied in with the present-day story of a young woman who goes to her family’s home in Burgundy to study for her Master of Wine exam where she learns much more than just the history of their vineyard.During the 1940s, war is in full force, a young French woman living with her father and two young stepbrothers, is under the thumb of her truly wicked stepmother, and once the Nazis come to town the family is at odds. There is nobody to oversee their vineyard, food is scarce, and illness takes over many.There is so much physical and emotional pain in this story, heartache that affects generations, yet at the same time, by unearthing and teaching history, comes the hope of regaining family ties and in the preservation of friendship, and a sense of pride in where you come from.

Highly recommend this book; while it would be a great beach read, calling it that might seem like insult to such a thoughtful and well-written book. This is the first book I have finished in four years since having my first child. I could not put it down, and read it in about 2 days. Skipped my grocery shopping in fact to keep reading. The story is interesting and complex without being confusing (not even to this scrambled egg mom-brain); the characters are well developed; the portrait of the landscape of Burgundy and lifestyle of french winemakers is really transporting. I found the details of occupied France fascinating and it made me want to learn more about France during this time, about which I know embarrassingly little.

The Lost Vintage is a novel that surprised me. There have been countless World War II novels published in the last few years, but this is the first I've read that focused on Occupied France. The story is told through a dual storyline. The main one takes place in present day California and the Burgundy region of France as Kate Elliott returns to her ancestral home, a vineyard that has been in the family for generations, in order to study for the Master of Wine exam. While there, she discovers a secret cellar, filled with vintage wines. She also discovers the story of her unknown great aunt, Helene, whose journals tell the other story of Occupied France during World War II.Ann Mah's writing completely captivated me. The many twists and turns in this tale are expertly weaved into a story about family, choices, and sacrifice. I highly recommend this book.

Another wonderful book by Ann Mah. From the first page I was hooked and couldn't wait to see how the story would unfold. I wanted to know what happened within this family with the dual timeline. I learned about the wine industry as well as WWII events that I had forgotten or maybe didn't want to know. The book shares history as well as love and commitment.

Just finished! I would give this book 6 stars if I could. Brilliantly realized characters and a fabulously executed story that starts slowly but builds to an inferno. I love it when a book can take you places you've never been and make you an insider along with the characters. A terrific mystery and masterful interweaving of compelling story lines that keeps you guessing the whole way. Fantastic work! Highly recommended. My only criticism is that it ended. (Although I loved the conclusion, I just didn't want the book to be over).

Summary: two time period historical romance centered on the French resistance and burgundy wine 🍷 7.5/10The good: two likable heroines from two periods of time. Both storylines are quick paced, interesting, and well written. This story has mystery, romance, adventure, lots of 🍷, and written well; hard not to love it.The bad: the ending felt like it was very abrupt to me and a bit cliche. It also annoyed me how many times the present day heroine “chewed on her inner lip.” That phrase was used excessively and got annoying by the end.

Ann Mah is an extraordinary writer, and The Lost Vintage is a delicious concoction of mystery, deftly handled family drama, and a fascinating glimpse into the world of wine-making. A vineyard in Burgundy, secrets hidden since World War II, and two perfectly-balanced narratives (one contemporary, one set during the war), make this an unforgettable read. Mah never, ever disappoints - I've loved all of her books, but this might just be my favorite. She's one of the few writers who can effortlessly switch between fiction and non-fiction.

This book is an important historical novel, bringing light to a part of French history I didn't know about -- and it's a page-turning love story that I could not put down. I loved the characters and the feeling that I was with them in French wine country. I loved joining them to unravel the mystery of what happened at the vineyard in WWII. And I loved the way the contemporary and historical narratives intertwined. When I finished the book at 4 a.m., I wanted to turn back to the first page and start again.

I’ve always been fascinated by America, the American experiment, the American experience. In college, I found my place in the sociology, anthropology, political science and literature of the American people, values and ideals. My novels are born of the culture of merging, conflicting cultures we, as Americans, were born into, from my conviction that dealing with that experience is the challenge of being American. Only once before, in 1968, have I had the horrifying sense that the country was coming apart under the strain, a sense of the great experiment disintegrating.What has happened to us? Where did this disintegration into hate and violence, this contempt for our institutions begin and where is it taking us? From all of my early studies, the work that keeps coming to mind, as I look for answers is Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America. De Tocqueville was a French aristocrat who hated tyranny and feared that democracy would disintegrate into tyranny of the majority. He understood, however that democracy was the future, so in 1831 he came to America in order to see it in action. To my mind, no student should graduate from high school in the United States without reading his observations and reflections on the American people, for we desperately need to renew our sense of not only the hope but the challenges of being an American and a commitment to support its survival as a democracy.De Tocqueville feared individualism and the abolition of the class system that, he believed, gave order and stability to the European nations. He believed that without that order, people would be forever anxious about where they belonged and would end up forever comparing themselves to each other. Forever insecure, their individualism would devolve into selfishness and each would end up alone. We should take a good look at ourselves in light of this fear. Has our insecurity, our need to know where we belong splintered us into rival groups where each gains stature by debunking the other?However, De Tocqueville also found in the Americans, an equality unknown in Europe and with a deep sense of community and civil order. He found a people committed to building a new world, to resolving together the problems that confronted them. He believed that the multitude of civic organizations would counter the dangers of individualism. The men, he thought, would forever strive to power and acquisition of wealth, but the mores, the “habits of the heart” carried by the women, would provide the civilizing force.He has a great deal to say about the role of religion in the New World and many other subjects, but this gives a taste of a perspective different enough to shake up the all-to-stale ideologies that have broken us into enemy camps. We have indeed joined civil action groups, but we have, since Trump’s election, discovered the importance of unwritten mores, that undergird our common culture. That gives us the opportunity to regain our sense of belonging to a whole.His views on the role of women should spark lively conversations on individualism versus commitment for both genders as well as on the effect of the rampant greed of the eighties and nineties. De Tocqueville believed it is the “habits of the heart” that give the Americans strength. We need to rediscover those together.

This is a review of the Library of America 2004 edition of Democracy in America translated by Arthur Goldhammer, found here: Alexis de Tocqueville: Democracy in America: A new translation by Arthur Goldhammer (Library of America). Unfortunately Amazon lumps together reviews of several different editions from several publishers, so it is difficult to know which edition is being reviewed. For this reason, and because many others have reviewed the content of Tocqueville's amazingly insightful work, I will focus solely on the physical aspects of the Library of America edition.In my opinion, the Library of America edition is excellent. It is not the least expensive edition, but I believe it is worth the extra dollars, and is really quite reasonably priced given the quality. Considering it contains over 900 pages covering both volumes 1 and 2 of Democracy in America, the book is remarkably compact at 5 inches wide by 8 inches tall by 1.25 inches thick. This is made possible by using thin paper which still appears to be quite durable. The hardbound binding also appears to be very durable, and even contains a built-in ribbon marker. Even the dust jacket is made from heavier than usual stuff. The font used for the text is large and very clear. The 2004 translation by Goldhammer is in what I would call a modern style of English that I found easy to understand. In other words, I didn't have to fight the translation in order to follow and think about what Tocqueville was actually saying.There are several helps included. The frontispiece contains a map from the original 1835 edition that describes North America as it was when Missouri and Arkansas were the westernmost states. Translated from the French, it proved to be quite helpful at times. The end of the volume contains a chronology that is a pretty thorough biography of Tocqueville himself. There is also an extensive index, along with notes on the text and translation.All in all, I found this to be an understandable and durable edition that does justice to Tocqueville's timeless work. I recommend it.

It is quite amazing and by far my favorite translation and compilation of all things Tocqueville. How the books and chapters are divided at first seem confusing, but you quickly adjust if you are familiar with Tocqueville. I am definitely not a Tocqueville scholar, but I guarantee this is the greatest review of the American political system to this day. Pick up a copy of The Federalist Papers and Anti-federalist Papers while you're at it and you will have the quintessential trifecta of American democracy.

Given that I do not speak/read French, I cannot speak to the accuracy of the translation, however, this translation was a pleasure to read in English. Also, the footnotes were helpful, and the chronology section helped put Tocqueville himself in context nicely. I read the kindle edition, and it was well formatted.Apart from this specific translation/edition, I don't think that I can add much that isn't already out there about Democracy in America other than perhaps to point out that you are much less likely to find it interesting if you are not at least somewhat familiar with 18th and 19th century French history. If this is the case, I would recommend at least reading "Revolutionary France 1770-1880" by François Furet prior to starting Democracy in America.

Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said in a CNN interview in 1998:"This civilization is best described by the renowned French sociologist Alexi de Toqueville who spent some two years in the U.S. in the 19th century and wrote the valuable book entitled Democracy in America, which I am sure most Americans have read."Well, I don't think that's the case. I've taken this book around with me for the last few years and have asked many Americans... and have yet to meet one.

The girl is an autistic savant with an incredible IQ. She is also deaf and mute which makes retrieving the information next to impossible. Or is it? The Electroclan must travel to Taiwan, and much to their dismay, have to bring along a surprising old acquaintance. Dr. Hatch and The Elgen have become more formidable than anyone could have imagined. Tensions are at all-time high as these teens face their toughest challenge yet.Kids and adults will enjoy the spark filled action in this book. It is well written and the attention to details is amazing. One of the things I really appreciate about this series is that it uses the right amount of challenging vocabulary and engaging geography to keep readers of any age riveted. The positive role models are refreshing and serve to show that anyone can be a hero by the choices they make. I totally recommend this book and the entire series. Well done RPE! Zappy Reading!!

I was going to give it 3 out of 5 stars, but then I contacted the seller about my missing package and they responded in less than an hour! That bumped it up to 3.5 stars. Then when I went to the P.O., they found the package and told me they had put it in the 'undeliverable pile' because there was only a street address on it and no P.O. Box. I then bumped the rating up to four stars, seeing as how they can't control what my Post Office did with the package once it arrived. I also am very satisfied with the quality of the product overall! I don't know if all books get this mark (second pic) but I've noticed it on many of my books.Brand new an crisp! No bent edges or folded pages! Yayyy!

I've been reading this series loyally. I loved the first two books, but I have to admit I'm getting more frustrated with each book. How many times can these kids get captured and escape? This book didn't deliver anything I'd hoped for. Given the lead from the third book, and the title of this one, I expected a lot more story surrounding the Jade Dragon, but it felt more like she was only partially thought through, and barely acknowledged, just to justify title. The entire book felt repetitious. It dragged on and on only to end with yet another cliffhanger that felt contrived to sell more books. I honestly felt cheated. I won't be preordering the next book. I will be waiting to see reviews before I decide whether to read it at all.

Thank you Richard Evans for writing these books!!! My son did not read at all the first semester of 5th grade. Once he started to read a book, he would say that it did not interest him and he would not finish it. I wondered if he would ever read again. It was frustrating. His teacher read the 1st Michael Vey book to his class of 26 students. Once that was finished my son begged me to buy the 2nd and 3rd book for him to read. I was skeptical but he read each from cover to cover in a few days. He is now on the 4th book. I panic to think what he will do when he finishes this book series. The other boys in the class have all asked him if they can borrow his books after he is finished. They continue to go from boy to boy and I wonder if I will ever see these books again!

This series had first begun as and exhilarating tale full of suspense and surprises for their readers and that same technique surely has not fallen short in this thrilling sequel of the series that caught the world by storm. An electric storm, that is. Anyone who loves suspenseful and action-filled stories that never make you want to stop reading should definitely buy this book. I know for sure that I made the right decision getting it. Be sure to read the other three books before you start reading this one, though. You won't regret it!

I love these books. Number four is not losing momentum at all. I've been reading RPE from the very beginning. He has found something very different in himself with these Michael Vey books. This is just great storytelling, great writing, great characters with morals and values. I'm so tired of moral relativism and female anti-heroes which are all the rage right now, where nothing is ever really evil and no one is ever really good. Here you will find the opposite concepts; corruption and greed balanced against sacrifice, forgiveness and redemption. I would read it to my 8-10 year old the first time through because, honestly, it's scary. There are a couple of spots where I had to put it down, and several spots that made me cry. The cliff hanger is killer and may evoke some tough emotions in kids. I can't wait to read these books to my grandkids when they are old enough. Mostly because it will give me an excuse to re-read them myself.

After reading the visible reviews, I was a bit gun shy to read this book. Then I took the time to read the "other" reviews and wondered why those two were featured. So, the story didn't end the way those readers wanted it to end. But this is a series and books and movies in series often end with cliffhangers. I can't wait to read the next one and how many more will there be in the series? Do the Elgen ever bite the dust? Does HRH Hatch ever run out of people to stomp on and destroy? Will no one ever stand up to him with finality? The next installment will answer some questions....

I liked the simplicity of this book. I haven't wrestled now for over 20 years so it helped to refresh my memory on a lot of things to help my son.

Has lots of useful information and it is portable.

My husband coaches youth wrestling and says its an excellent tool to help him with his kids and exercise activities.
