Review
"Brad Roth has done a wonderful, unusual thing: he has thought about the rural church in a way that combines both honesty and hope. He is gentle with the flaws that often beset rural congregations, while at the same time managing to see the small church as a unique servant of God." --Will Willimon, professor of the practice of Christian ministry, Duke Divinity School"God's Country is a balm to the soul for all who seek the kingdom in rural communities. For anyone who fears that the sun has set on vibrant rural congregations, Brad Roth offers a sage call for hope and renewal. This renewal is not born of imported strategies for church growth. Everything need not change. It begins with 'loving rural' and making one's home among a people formed by ancient ways." David Boshart, moderator of Mennonite Church USA" You can sense Brad Roth's love for rural people on every page in this book. . . . This is a book I will assign to divinity students and to a prominent position on my shelf. " --Leonard Sweet, theologian and futurist, from foreword Drawing on his experience of serving the church in rural Washington, Kansas, and Peru, Brad Roth offers a vivid, uplifting and informed vision for an ecclesioculture that embraces the marginalized rural church. In a time in which rural-urban polarization is increasing, Roth draws on the biblical image of Zion, imagined as a place where holy city and holy rural coexist, equally valued in the body of Christ. This is a book of inspiration for the whole church, in all places. Jeanne Hoeft, coauthor of Practicing Care in Rural Congregations and Communities Brad Roth really understands rural ministry it s hard . . . it s beautiful . . . it s dangerous . . . it s worth it! He understands the challenges and yet still loves living and ministering in a rural town. As an author of a book on this same topic, I found God's Country helpful and inspiring, and I think you will too. Donnie Griggs, author of Small Town Jesus and pastor of One Harbor Church, North Carolina God s Country is a beautiful book about a beautiful, vital part of Christianity: the rural church. Brad Roth helps us see the unique characteristics of the rural church without the typical, shallow stereotypes. He tackles our temptation to see only the surface, to either deplore the state of the rural church or romantically glorify it. And best of all, he calls us to love. We choose to tell a story of love, and that story shapes who we become. We love the rural church just like it is, and we love it enough to call it forth to new life. Michele Hershberger, Bible professor, Hesston College Brad Roth deftly weaves his social and theological analysis of the rural church in America with his own challenging experiences in that context. As the writing shifts between a wide-angled analytical lens, and a zoomed-in, standing-in-a-muddy-wheat-field anecdotal lens, readers will come to understand the problem and promise of the rural church in all its complexity. Tom Montgomery Fate, author of Steady and Trembling and Cabin Fever God s Country is a balm to the soul for all who seek the kingdom in rural communities. For anyone who fears that the sun has set on vibrant rural congregations, Brad Roth offers a sage call for hope and renewal. This renewal is not born of imported strategies for church growth. Everything need not change. It begins with loving rural and making one s home among a people formed by ancient ways. --David Boshart, moderator, Mennonite Church USA

I grew up in a small community in the Texas panhandle, then later pastored a church in an even smaller town in the heart of Oklahoma. Brad Roth's insights and wisdom are solid. He has his finger on the pulse of the culture and traditions of these towns, as well as the churches that form part of their life together. Any pastor and any congregation--rural or otherwise--will profit from his words. And his words are well-written. There's a poetry and simple beauty to his writing that is refreshing and kept me turning the pages. I look forward to reading more of his work.
Rural Tennessee was my home for 22 years. I was raised on a dairy farm, attended a public k-12 school, and was in the church every time the doors were opened. This book does an incredible job of recognizing the positives of rural ministry and a rural context in the midst of a culture and society that despises and maligns the rural areas of our country.I highly recommend this work to all people of faith regardless of your context. Serving in a rural context should not be seen as a failure or an afterthought. There are image-bearers in these "somewhere" places that need to know the gospel is for them too. This book helps put that truth in its proper perspective.
Excellent Book! Anybody who has ever attended or done ministry in a small town or rural church will view this book as a treasure chest of interesting gems and ideas. The author is brutally honest about such church settings without turning to cynicism nor too much Pollyanna optimism.
Deep, balanced, practical, wise insight! This book helped me to "fall in love" with my own rural church and community again. How precious! As a rural church pastor, I found this book is very relevant and engaging in many ways. In particular, for me personally, I think "abide" and "pray and watch" are very helpful advice for fruitful rural ministry. I strongly recommend this book for those who love rural churches and for pastors and leaders who serve rural churches.
Excellent book on rural ministry! While written with more of a pastoral audience in mind, a large cross-section of our congregation just finished a book study on Roth's book and participants found it thought-provoking and insightful. We need more books and authors working to point out and uncover signs of hope and resurrection in both our rural communities and our rural churches!
Brad Roth writes about rural ministry with depth, warmth and spiritual reflection. This work gives fresh insights into rural life and ministry. This book gives the smallest of communities the importance it deserve from the perspective of God's work of creating every place. This work gives insight to God's great affection and work in the rural community and a spiritual leader's partnership with him in ministry there. This book is a good resource for anyone involved in ministry and everyone involved in the life of a rural church
In a ministry world of bigger and better bells and whistles, Roth's missional vision of "ecclesioculture" - and ecological vision and practice of Church life and ministry as essential to the life of a community - is deeply refreshing. If it weren't painfully ironic, I'd encourage him to rent out a convention center somewhere, package it all up real slick, and promote his "new fangled" ideas as the latest and greatest!! [Insert wry smile here].
Very encouraging reminders about the basics of shepherding God's people. Also very insightful into the ways that the rural church blesses the broader kingdom of God.
