I found the need to develop a database system for the company I'm currently working on. The software choice for this development was Access, a part of Microsoft Office that is powerful enough to handle the company's database.At first I tried learning Access all by myself, but I found it difficult to understand. I could start from scratch, did a lot of web research and even came up with some functional queries, forms and tables. But I needed more. I needed to optimize the relations between tables, I needed to fully understand the queries, forms and reports.I decided to buy this book.It was the best decision I made. The book is a great reference for Access. It makes you learn in a natural way, you don't even feel it. I've started reading this book and suddenly I was already optimizing my database project.The book is really good at showing you how to think, how things work and how to correctly structure the database form optimal performance.
I have no idea whether I like this book or not. But, it is supposed to have example databases downloadable from the "Valuable Companion Website."The link given in the text just takes you to the Wiley publishing site. After a while, you can find the book and download page. However, you can't download the examples without permission. So how do you get permission? Beats me! So, you try to contact Wiley to find out. Happy to help - if you can figure out how to contact them. The contact page is useless. There is "customer support." But you can't get to it without creating an account. So, you fill out a form to get a username and password. Then there is a captcha field at the end of the form. After about 50 tries - I gave up. We all use captcha all the time. It's a necessary evil. But, I've never been totally defeated by it until now. If anyone can help me get those files, I'll reconsider my review.Update: I tried the Wiley site again and apparently someone has repaired the Catcha. This time I got it on the second try. I was able to get to customer support and finally found a chat feature. It took a while to wake someone up and they couldn't figure out how I could download the files either. The work-around was to create a zip file and make it possible for me to download it via a private portal. So, in the end, I acquired the necessary example files. This is a top-notch reference. I am a new Access user with lots of experience in IT as a professional, but not much with databases. I have been working on a fairly simple database, but there are still lots of little things I need to know and I have found help with most everything in this book.It has an extensive index, I do not have it with me right now, but it must be somewhere in the range of 20-30 pages. You can find numerous references in the index to almost anything that you need.Also, the website associated with the book has a downloadable file with example databases for all the samples in the book. That is really useful in that you can find samples of lots of things and examine any detail you need to review.I would recommend this as the one book to get if you are going to be working with Access 2013! I wish I had purchased it sooner, but initially I was working with Access 2007, then discovered my target users were all using Access 2013.The book is worth every penny of the cost, even at it's suggested retail price!
I just received this book and am only 34 pages in but I already feel compelled to write a great review. This is probably the 5th or 6th Access book I've read and it is like no other. I know a lot about Access basics but being the OCD perfectionist that I am, I decided to start from page 1 (well, page "ix" to be exact LOL) just in case there are little tidbits about the basics that might help me out along the way. I wasn't disappointed. The explanations in this book (even for the "simple" stuff) are amazingly detailed without being overly technical and dry. I'm learning things about Access that I never knew (like the difference between object tables, transaction tables, and join tables). I'm not a technologist... just a random office worker who got a wild hair up her butt several years ago to learn Access one day. I've never been formally trained with regards to databases or the theory of database design. Book learning and hands on practice are all I have to go on. I'm now a self-employed sole proprietor and use Access to keep up with all of my business-related transactions. Being able to design my own database has been a great learning experience and a huge money saver thanks to books like these. I'm currently trying to learn enough to build a database to track my family finances. I'm looking forward to finishing this book and updating my review with more good stuff. Thanks to those who worked hard to make such a comprehensive, easy-to-read book about a potentially VERY boring topic!!!
