About the Author
PROFESSOR VYVYAN EVANS is an internationally renowned expert on language and communication. He received his PhD in Linguistics from Georgetown University, Washington DC., and has taught at the University of Sussex, Brighton University, and Bangor University. He has published over a dozen books on language, meaning, and mind, including The Language Myth: Why Language is Not an Instinct (2014) and The Crucible of Language: How Language and Mind Create Meaning (2015). Evans is a much sought-after public speaker, and frequently provides expert opinion on language to the written and broadcast media. His writing has been featured in The Guardian, Newsweek, New Scientist, and Psychology Today, among other publications.

Indeed, Emoji is becoming ubiquitous. Evans spells it with a capital ‘E’ as we would spell ‘English’ or ‘Japanese’, affirming it as a new language. This book is not just about the similarities between Emoji and language, but also their differences. It is timely to pay attention to Emoji and what we do with it (as well as what it is doing to us) because, as a form of communication, it is (Evans tells us), like language, one of the most prevalent human behavior. Even hand signals like blowing a kiss, or waving goodbye, we share our intentionality with our fellow beings, a form of ‘benign mind control’ as Evans puts it; but it ‘enables us to coordinate our interaction and actions way beyond the capability of any other species’. Evans discusses the meaning of language and what makes a language. He compares Latin and English grammar to show that we need not arrange words in any particular order to make sense. But grammar is still important, and Evans believes that it is possible to imbue Emoji with grammar. Although he raises and tries to answer the question whether Emoji will evolve into a true language, he thinks is a question that misunderstands the function and significance of Emoji. This is what he discusses in detail from chapter 4. Emoji is pictorial and communicates in silence. It functions well in explicating emotion (hence, ‘emoticons’), it complements the spoken word. He identifies six ways in which this can be achieved by Emoji. First, it does so by substitution – we can either say ‘yes’ or we can nod our head, and hence a thumbs up emoji indicates OK; second, it can reinforce speech, like our shaking of the head when we say ‘no’; third, it adds communicative value to show to prompt an ironic reading; fourth, to add information; fifth, providing emphasis or accentuation; and it manages the flow of an ongoing discourse – by using the same gesture or Emoji at the start and at a later point to tie up two points in the conversation thread. The book concludes with the author’s ruminations about the future of communication and the role of Emoji. But that, he concedes, is not easy, mitigating his own efforts by the scene in the 1982 version of Blade Runner where Harrison Ford still rang from a hard wired phone – because even in 1982, no one could conceive of the mobile phone. 😊

Who knew that there is so much information about emoji that you can write a book? And who knew that actually this book will be fun to read?Emoji is part of our every day life. We use them to communicate, to express feelings and emotions, to send a message. They are fun, and often quicker , than writing the whole word. Emoji comes from two Japanese words: "e"- picture and "moji"- character. They are global form of communication. they are a cultural phenomenon.I had no idea that actually it takes so much time and effort to make emoji available on all platforms. Emoji has to go over strict criteria and be approved by Unicode Consortium.Emoji, like language, changes, involves and develops. It became universal way to communicate and it doesn't look like emoji is going to be removed any day soon. Quite contrary- it becomes stronger form of communication. "Viva Emoji".
I kept expecting insights that would connect emojis to the development of language. Never found them.
