This book shines in reteaching everything I forgot about biochemistry for STEP 1. The outline style of writing does not detract from the book's ability to teach from the ground up. Please note that if you are looking for help memorizing small details about diseases, you would be better off spending time with FIRSTAID's tables. On several occasions I found that information was lacking, but this may be intentional on the part of the editors/authors to only present high yield information.The online practice questions are NOT board style, they are overly simplistic and will only test your knowledge of keywords and COMPLETE/stereotypical disease presentations. Additionally, in spite of what the book's introduction suggests, there is only one way of taking the practice questions (random order from the whole databank).Having an online copy of the book is nevertheless excellent, and the clinical key web site is well designed and highly functional.
First off, if you aren't a fan of the Rapid Review/Goljan outline formatted text, proceed with caution. It's definitely not for everyone.I used this book as a supplement for Step1 studying with my First Aid. It was a great review of all things biochem that I had forgotten since early first year. It's definitely not the most substantial biochem book available, but I thought it was very useful for Step 1. Step 1 doesn't require PhD-depth of knowledge of biochem (which we were all probably taught as fist year med students). So this book was useful in cutting out the excess we were all taught and gets down to the important enzymes, reactions, co-factors, and such. There are also useful clinical correlates.Overall, I thought this book was EXTREMELY useful as a supplement to the lacking First Aid. I actually wish I had this book first year, as it would have clarified many topics.
One thing I have always loved about Goljan's review books is that they are easy to read and stress a good conceptual framework. He uses an outline format but they are mostly complete sentences.My only criticism is that Rapid Review Biochemistry feels a little rushed and like it doesn't have 100% attention to detail, especially in the tables. To compare, Rapid Review Pathology is a little more of a polished book. For instance, under cobalamin deficiency (Table 4-1), achlorhydria is listed as a sign/symptom. Okay, if you have cobalamin deficiency secondary to pernicious anemia that's definitely true, but it's not quite true as written. Small things like this add up. Still one of the better biochem review books in my opinion.
To be honest, I'm not a fan of the board review series with the exception of this book. As you know biochem is one of those subjects that can stand alone or be incorporated into other subjects. With the vast amount of biochem that is needed for step 1 I thought they did a great job or organizing and explaining the material. I found it very helpful
This is a great resource in addition to First Aid when studying for Step 1 (or any biochem test). The list format and notes in the margins make it a relatively easy read.
Skimmed through this baby. And I love how concise it is. Gonna definitely be a great supplement to use with my other study material. Thanks Dr. Pelley and Dr Goljan
Great book. Well organized, short and to the point. Exactly what is needed for a med student prepping for STEP 1.
Anyone who is a fan of Dr. Goljan, renowned pathologist, would like this book. It's easy read and I have seen questions pop up studying for my STEP1 directly from this book!
