I have owned several of the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards in the past but not one since they split the vintage cards into their own book. I looked for a 2018 edition but the latest available was this 6th that was published in 2016. The prices may not be up to the minute but I'm not a dealer and only use the prices for my own database of my own collection so my inheritors will have a basic guide to go by. Every single card is listed which I find more helpful than the way Beckett does it, only listing the top cards in a particular set. The problems I noticed almost immediately in my work with Topps cards from the 50's. (I haven't looked at other cards yet.) I've seen star cards where the listed VG price is higher than the EX price and this is repeated with the similarly priced cards in the set. I've seen the price of common cards noted at the top of the list to be one thing and in the list, quite another for the whole set or the particular series in question. This last corresponds to the problem of the steps, NM to EX to VG, being out of wack for one series of a set compared of other series or even the general steps of other sets. (By steps, I mean the price graduations.) These are clearly errors in the editing or whatever price generator they are using and something I had not seen in other editions. All the other editions I have owned I would have rated 5 stars if I had rated them. This one is a disappointment.
Has all the vintage cards, but need maybe an online source to look up current prices. Card prices can change from month to month and the prices in this book should just be a guideline not the last word.
No filler nickel cards here. This is the guide for the serious collector with older cards. I have lots of pre-WWII cards. I was able to find checklists and prices for all of them. I'm glad I don't have to page through thousands of 1980s and 1990s cheap cards to find what I want.
