I hope to write a follow up as I have only begun to read this delightful ramble through an English apple orchard. Anybody who has seen any of Stephen Hayes’ YouTube videos on apple orcharding will want to read this semi-autobiographical treatment of raising apples and other tree fruits.Update November 2, 2017: I bumped this review up to 5 stars. It’s self published so it has a good number of typos. What do you expect? Hopefully Dr. Hayes will revise quickly. The book is still worth five stars. Stephen Hayes has a natural ease in writing that makes the reading seem like a stroll through his orchard with a personal one-on-one tour. I don’t agree with all of Hayes’ orchard practices but I was engrossed with his telling of it.
If you have watched the author's videos, you will understand the writing style. He's not a professional author, rather, he writes as if he is sitting across the table, talking to a friend. This is a mash of the technical information on how to run an orchard mixed together with not a minor but not a major amount of biography of his family and his orchard.It won't be a gold standard of orcharding reference book as it contains too many personal stories. Nor will it be an outstanding book of short stories.as it contains a lot of technical information. If, however, you are thinking about starting an orchard or living in one this is a great book to get you headed in the right direction. If you like reading "how life is" type stories, it will be a good fit. If you like his YouTube vlogging style, you will like the book.
Author gives first hand account of managing a several 100 tree orchard, relaying both successes and failures he has experienced after 25+ years of experience.Author provides detailed descriptions of what Apple's have worked for him and why, while also establishing weaknesses a variety may have.I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to start a fruit tree planting of their own regardless of size, it will prove to be an invaluable reference of experiences from someone who has already walked the walk.
Loved the style Stephen chose to write this. Very informative and easy to read. I especially liked the fact that he put his personal 30+ years experience out there and gave the information as he sees it opposed to stating the generalities on the subjects.Highly recommend!
Mr. Hayes manages to weave both anecdotal and technical details of orchard keeping in a delightful way that is certain to please any orchardist, whether they keep 1 or 1000 trees. He explores traditional and modern methods, small scale and large scale. He encourages his readers by sharing many of the trials and tribulations he and his wife and family have experienced. This book will be cherished and reread by myself for a very long time.
Stephen Hayes has become a friend because I have watched his YouTube videos so many times I could quote him. I bought the book as a way of thanking him for his years of service in recording and posting his orchard videos. I am also truly enjoying reading his book. It’s written in the casual free flowing style that Steve users in his videos.
Very personal story of starting an apple orchard, the good parts and the bad parts. Very nicely written. The author is a Doctor and very good with a grafting knife, his Youtube videos on grafting are very good. Wish it had more on making cider, maybe the second edition :)
I enjoyed and learned from Steve’s book. I am also a proud owner of a heirloom apple orchard of 300 trees and honeybee Apiary of 23 hives. I could relate with Steve’s experience. It is good to hear about the orchard business from a realistic perspective. Despite all the headaches of operating an orchard it is a noble way to spend your time.
