While this is an old book, much of the data in this book seems to be based upon wartime press releases. There are multiple examples of what are basically USAAF wartime chest-beating. Just the most obvious is the treatment of the battle of Midway: the text relates numerous attacks that I simply cannot relate to reality. The number of hits upon maneuvering ships reported in the text, the number of attacks, and the targets of those attacks simply cannot be reconciled with official accounts published immediately post-war, much less those published a few decades later. The rating if 3 stars is given for the wealth of personal accounts in the text. When this work tries to relate what the crews thought they did with what really happened, it should be taken with VERY large doses of salt.

This book needs to be read with the understanding that it was written immediately after the war in 1946 and is chock full of regurgitated propaganda news clips and G.I. rumors. It needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt and one shouldn't assume anything in it is purely truthful as it is rife with claims that are totally inaccurate, wishful thinking, and/or tall tales from the barracks. For instance, NO B-17 ever hit an aircraft carrier with a bomb, unlike the numerous claims of such happening in this book. In short, it is not a trustworthy reference at all.

During the Pacific Theater of WW II the Marines and Army troops that invaded the different islands had it rough. One thing that many people do not realize is that after a unit had made an assault on an island it was held in reserve while it was built back to full strength and all personnel were recovered and physically ready to fight again before going back into combat. Most people do not think about the aircraft maintenance personnel who have to repair and rebuild the aircraft in order to have it ready to fly the next mission. This required living in poor conditions, usually in tents, with temperatures near 100 F with humidity the same with flies and mosquitoes spreading many diseases. This went on for weeks before the invasion, during the fighting for the island and evacuating the most seriously wounded to hospitals for advanced treatment. Then everything had to be packed up and moved to the next island where a new base was hacked out of the jungle while the war continued.

This was an excellent history of the 7th Air Force. It covers the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Pacific from December 7, 1941 through the end of the war. This book did an excellent job of telling the story on a personal level. While it recounts many harrowing bomber missions, it also tells the story of the unsung airmen who created air strips all across the Pacific and supported the mission by keeping the aircraft running, radars going, etc. In many cases, they landed right behind the front line troops during island hopping invasions and shared some unexpected experiences---banzai charges and bombings being the worst. This book is a fast read for a comprehensive approach to the subject. Lots of adventure in these pages.

The book, written in 1946, reflects the views Americans had of the Japanese during the war. The word Japs is used throughout the work. A lot of the historical references are way off. For instance the extremely optimistic bomb damage assessments from the USAAF B-17 bombers at Midway are completely wrong. The high altitude B-17 attacks didn't hit any IJN ships. USAAF attacks were along with the UNS torpedo squadrons, responsible for throwing the IJN carriers off sequence. Which left them such prime targets for the USN Dauntless dive bombers who took out 4 IJN carriers in a matter of hours. This should have been known to the authors after the end of the war. Overall the book provides good personal views of the war. plus a compelling overview of the 7th Air Force's contribution to the Pacific campaign. Just be cautious about relying on specifics for much of the after action damage claims.

This is the second time I read this book. The first was about 1949 or ‘50 when I was 9 or 10 years old and our local librarian let me into the adult book section. The copy I got from the library was well worn; the book was popular. The title caused a bit of a stir at school because of the word Damned. As a youngster, born in 1940, I remember many of the tensions of The War, and anxiety of many home front people. Those soldiers and sailors fighting were my dad, and uncles, the brothers and dads of our neighbors. This book captured the anxiety of the moment by naming the men involved. Naming names personalized their experiences. It wasn’t all triumphs. Many stories in this book told about their deaths. Many today look at WW II as always having been a done deal, the enemy had no chance when America got into the war. That’s only the perspective of hindsight. WW II was a tough fight. A lot of people gave everything to achieve victory. This book is a great telling of that story.

Never heard of these guys. I ended up reading it because I was researching a particular B-17E, 41-2644, 28th BS, 5th BG, 13th AAF. that my dad, a USNR PBY pilot, flew on a mission out of Fiji 2/12/1943 because he wanted to try one out. Easy to fly, noisy as hell. As with accounts of the war in the Pacific, the first part up to August, 1943, makes for the most interesting reading. Starting just before Pearl Harbor, we see the attack from the AAF viewpoint. Not much later, the intrepid airmen begin to attack the Japanese by any means they can contrive using the inadequate logistics at hand. I'm in awe. After that, the enormous wave of material hit the Pacific and killing the enemy becomes a business. The story becomes repetitious, less thrilling. Part of the repetition is that the Japanese never understood the nature of the thing the AAF was doing to them. They are unable to cope and and immediately fell victim to to the AAF's depredations. Lacking any innovations, and due to increasing Allied capabilities, the process intensifies.
