Primarily fiction about Bass Reeves as a young man with several unnecessary comments thrown in to show author has acceptable political thoughts. Skips giving any details about how Bass Reeves became a successful rancher and fairly bare bones recital of a few of his exploits as a federal marshall. Don’t recommend as a way to learn about Bass Reeves.

Nice easy read. Obviously though the author embellished alot of his earlier life which im not sure how I feel about honestly.....especially the earlier cringe worthy dialogue of him talking to his mother in a faux african american slave dialect supposedly...however luckily after the book progressed beyond that it was a good read. Still baffled though that many of the more unbelievable yet true amazing facts about the man didnt make it into this book. Which is weird because I'd have taken that over the made up b.s backstory that was added. Any beef I have with the book would be just that. Other than that gripe (which can be major depending on what youre expecting from the book) its entertaining and a nice introduction to a great man....However its not the best historical representation of he and his feats but serves as decent intro to someone who is just learning about him or for someone younger such as school children. I read it in one night.

The author claims Bass was born in 1824, 14 years earlier than other accounts. He also Bass running away 20 years before the Civil War while other non-fiction accounts claim he ran away during the Civil War. Three pages into the book it claims that this book is a work of fiction and any resemblance to any person living or dead is a coincidence. What a waste of time and money.

A fine book for preteens and younger. The author has a unique agenda. He in the first chapter belittle all the great names of the Old West as a variety of scoundrels and village idiots all of them being caucasian Americans. Then in his book with 30% of it a sheer fantasy he tries to explain how Bass Reeves became one of the greatest lawmen in the West. I agree with all the factual data about this awesome and amazing Afro-American deputy marshal and his fantastic reputation. Definitely a character that was overlooked by history because of race.

A great unsung hero given his due. A great snapshot of his difficult early life as a young slave and son of a slave in early 1800s NE Texas. Geared toward Young Adult readers but adults will love it. Only drawback: Wishing there was enough of his story known to make a longer more details book. For African-American dads this is a great book to help you talk to your children about the topic of slavery and what kind of man should be a role model for black males.

The thing they don't tell you about black history, you can build a new world

Saw the special about him on the History channel. Got this for my husband who was interested in learning more. As he is a non-reader I was surprised and thrilled to see him avidly reading. He enjoyed it and is almost finished. It's not a thick book and is full of interesting bits.

This paperback was great. it gave an insight on a man that before this year, I didn't know existed. In the book, I can see not only the reference to the "Lone Ranger" but I feel that Mr. Clint Eastwood may have read up on Bass Reeves before "Hang Em High". I intend to find out more on this BLACK U.S. Marshall.

First, the book is rife with overt spelling and grammar errors: words split in half with a period in the middle of it, random bolding, random misspelling, etc.Second the author is overtly indiscriminate with just blaming rhetoric with no tangible solutions. Seriously, her overarching solution to every problem in the world is to dissolve corporations and for people to live only within their local villages. What about modern medicine? What about space travel, and any other field of advanced technology? I get that technology has been used widely to perpetuate violence and this may be used as an argument against it, but does this truly justify living off of the food that we grow in the field next to our house, and nothing more? Shiva here perpetuates the kind of rhetoric that is portrayed by wild right-wing media outlets: bombastic, virtue-signaling irrational garbage. Wild claims of genocide by basically every corporation and government ever by Shiva are not the way to bring about any modicum of change she desires, and it is very good that that change will not come.

The irrepressible Vandana Shiva is a very energetic person who see's beyond the hype around WTO and GMO and knows what dangers these type of initiatives are to the earth and all life on it. If you have not read or know of Vandada Shiva before then I recommend you actually start with videos on you tube to hear her message. She is also in many movies such as the eclectic Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us? and Flow How did a handful of corporations steal our water.I would NOT recommend starting to learn about her views with this book. Right from the start the author's tone is very sharp in pointing out what's wrong with globalization versus the commons. It's a continuous boxing match and the author keeps laying in punch after punch. What is missing from this book is a set of preliminary concepts and contrasts of what is globalization and what is the commons and Earth Democracy. Without any kind of building of these themes the reader is put into a somewhat stressful situation. Most of what is then followed in the book is bad this and that. The ways to respond to globalization are not clearly enumerated and how YOU should act after hearing this material is not immediately evident. The reader is not drawn into the situation in a deep way and full explanations of the concepts is not attempted before getting into the thick of things. So it really is like having the volume turned up listening to these things like a news broadcast rather than an engaging read.So while I highly value and appreciate what Vandana Shiva is doing on the world stage, her ability to communicate a message that can sink in through the written word is not a strong suit at least in this specific book.

"Earth Democracy" by Vandana Shiva offers both a masterful critique of globalization and a hopeful vision for a better world. Ms. Shiva compares and contrasts top-down systems of authoritarianism and exclusion with bottom-up systems of egalitarianism and mutual cooperation to discuss how corporate power is proving to be a grave threat to democracy and the long-term viability of the planet. Ms. Shiva contends that a mutually-supportive network of empowered local communities might be able to create a global society that is based on humanitarian principles of peace, compassion and solidarity.Ms. Shiva has long been highly regarded as an activist and scholar. She has authored many books and is a frequent media commentator. "Earth Democracy" serves to further Ms. Shiva's stature as a leading intellectual who continues to eloquently voice the concerns of the poor. Her unique ability to blend science, history, politics, economics, gender issues and other fields of study into her text is impressive. The result is a book that rewards its readers with many pages of thought-provoking insight and analysis.Ms. Shiva points out that two thirds of humanity owes its livelihood to a sustenance economy that finds itself under increasing pressure from capital. She finds similarities in the earlier eras of enclosure and colonialism with today's struggle over intellectual property rights and patents, where the powerful use the law to privatize resources for profit. Arguing that overconsumption by the wealthy is the root cause of environmental destruction and human injustice, Ms. Shiva makes a compelling case for granting local communities more control over resources so that alternative, sustainable economies can be nurtured.Ms. Shiva brilliantly connects the insecurity wrought by globalization with the "ideologies of exclusion" and "cultural nationalism" that fuels war and terrorism. As state power largely serves to protect corporate interests, the economically uprooted and excluded masses seek identity through nationalist conflict and sometimes prove vulnerable to manipulation by religious extremists. On the other hand, Ms. Shiva cites the Indian farmer's struggles over seed and water rights as examples of how people might come together in a positive way to reclaim a more peaceful and secure future.Ms. Shiva reminds us that Mahatma Gandhi proved how small acts of resistance can hasten the end of empire. She believes that a multiplicity of movements such as Terra Madre that are struggling for food security, the environment, democracy and human rights will help us break free from the self-destructive path that has been prescribed for us by the corporate elite.I highly recommend this important and inspiring book to everyone.

This book was an eye opener and describes the unintended consequences of globalization and free trade by transnational corporations that are beholden to no country and follow and write their own rules. There are also glimmers of hope with some successes of the powerless against the behemoths. A nice quick read, but with concepts that are repeated more than necessary to drive home the points.

American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation

From Publishers Weekly

Historian and Newsweek editor Meacham's third book examines over 200 years of American history in its quest to prove the idea of religious tolerance, along with the separation of church and state, is "perhaps the most brilliant American success." Meacham's principal focus is on the founding fathers, and his insights into the religious leanings of Jefferson, Franklin, Adams and Co. present a new way of considering the government they created. So it is that the religious right's attempts to reshape the Constitution and Declaration of Independence into advocating a state religion of Christianity are at odds with the spirit of religious freedom ("Our minds and hearts, as Jefferson wrote, are free to believe everything or nothing at all-and it is our duty to protect and perpetuate this sacred culture of freedom"). Meacham also argues for the presence of a public religion, as exemplified by the national motto, "In God We Trust," and other religious statements that can be found on currency, in governmental papers and in politicians' speeches. Subsequent chapters consider a wartime FDR and a Reagan who grew increasingly enamored of Armageddon. All are well-written, but none reach the immediacy and vigor of the chapters on the nation's birth. Two extensive appendices reprint early government documents and each president's inaugural bible verses. Meacham's remarkable grasp of the intricacies and achievements of a nascent nation is well worth the cover price, though his consideration of Reagan feels like that of an apologist.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Advance Praise for American Gospel“In his American Gospel, Jon Meacham provides a refreshingly clear, balanced, and wise historical portrait of religion and American politics at exactly the moment when such fairness and understanding are much needed. Anyone who doubts the relevance of history to our own time has only to read this exceptional book.”–David McCullough, author of 1776“Jon Meacham has given us an insightful and eloquent account of the spiritual foundation of the early days of the American republic. It is especially instructive reading at a time when the nation is at once engaged in and deeply divided on the question of religion and its place in public life.”–Tom Brokaw, author of The Greatest Generation“An absorbing narrative full of vivid characters and fresh thinking, American Gospel tells how the Founding Fathers–and their successors–struggled with their own religious and political convictions to work out the basic structure for freedom of religion. For me this book was nonstop reading.”–Elaine Pagels, professor of religion, Princeton University, author of Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas “Jon Meacham is one of our country’s most brilliant thinkers about religion’s impact on American society. In this scintillating and provocative book, Meacham reveals the often-hidden influence of religious belief on the Founding Fathers and on later generations of American citizens and leaders up to our own. Today, as we argue more strenuously than ever about the proper place of religion in our politics and the rest of American life, Meacham’s important book should serve as the touchstone of the debate.” –Michael Beschloss, author of The Conquerors“At a time when faith and freedom seem increasingly polarized, American Gospel recovers our vital center–the middle ground where, historically, religion and public life strike a delicate balance. Well researched, well written, inspiring, and persuasive, this is a welcome addition to the literature.”–Jonathan D. Sarna, Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History, Brandeis University, author of American Judaism: A History

Jon Meachum has been a favorite of mine. He is a journalist by profession and by design. He really does want to know what the truth is. He approached this question by digging into what the FFs actually SAID. What a novel idea! He explores the issue not by proof texting which is popular today but by stringing together numerous data and situations so u can make your own decision. He lets the FFs define "public religion" in their own words. He also explores beyond the FFs and traces the thoughts and writings from most of the presidents of the US. If u are interested in the words and not just being told what they mean...check this out.

A well researched essay on the origins and use of religion in America. This study presents a clear case for religion in American government and life, not an adherence to any particular brand of faith, but a "public religion" that recognizes the hugely common belief in a devine providence that created us and our universe and presides in some form over our lives. If you are troubled by all the public discord today in 2017 about religion in America, then this book will set your mind and thinking on the right path. As always, Meacham is thoughtful, temperate, polite, and very readable.

American Gospel is the story of public religion in the United States from the Pilgrim father John Winthrop's City on the Hill to the present day. The best chapters deal with the writing of the Declaration of Independence by the brilliant Thomas Jefferson through the issuance of the US Constitution to the Emancipation Proclamation, the fight for women and African Americans and the low wall separating church and state. America is not a Christian nation tied to one particular denomination but a pluralistic freedom of religion republic where all faiths may flourish and worship God in their own way. Jon Meacham is a gifted historian and lay theologian teaching at Vanderbilt University. As a longtime Presbyterian minister I love this book published in 2006. With all of our nation's challenges and inequalities still existing we should thank God that we live in the land of the free and the home of the brave. In this testing time this book is relevant filled with important insights to guide our nation in the future. Excellent and well recommended!

It’s not much wonder that Jon Meacham is a Pulitzer Prize winner. I’m only half way through American Gospel but already have gained a much better understanding of how religion, especially Christianity has been a powerful influence on the development of a uniquely American version of democracy. The extraordinary vision of the Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin in particular and their thoughtful focus on creating a society that was open and inclusive stands in stark contrast to the isolationist, fear driven, self serving leadership of so many of 21st century American politicians of both major Parties.Meacham, wisely often inserts the actual words written and spoken by America’s revolutionary leaders. And in doing so reveals the depth of their commitment to a new social and political order founded on the principles of freedom for ALL irrespective of race, religion, or wealth. As I read further I may discover the Founders’ vision for America of freedom for all including women, and indigenous populations. However something tells me even their hope and intention for America didn’t quite meet the full test of inclusiveness, reasonableness and timeliness. All up It’s a wonderful book. The writing is straightforward and easy to follow. Meacham is not biased or parochial in his description of America and it’s early post revolutionary days.I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who is interested in better understanding the “why”, the “who” and the “how” of what made America great and perhaps what today puts that vision at risk.

Was our country founded as a Christian nation, combination Christian and other faiths, or no faith? The American Gospel delves into that question. Normally when this question is asked, there are biased views to the "it was Christian or it was not". I reject those positions because the proof shown for each side cherry picks alleged statements, documents, diaries, etc.The American Gospel does in-depth research and finds there is some of both. The research is very profound and provides sources that Jon does not cherry pick. I loved it.
