As a descendant of Stephen Hopkins and his daughter, Constance, I was very interested in her experiences on the Mayflower voyage, and early experiences living in Plymouth. It was also the first time I learned of her meeting and eventually choosing to marry Nicholas Snow. My husband and I hope to travel to Plymouth later this year.

Even though it was written for a young adult I enjoyed reading what life was liked from the viewpoint of Constance Hopkins. I went on line to read more about her family.

Great read. Written for teen readers of historical fiction, it stays close to the known storyline of the life of Constance Hopkins, who was one of the Mayflower passengers to the New World in 1620. Her father was an important member of the fledgling community, even though not originally a member of the religious contingent. For much more about him, see Caleb Johnson's "Here Shall I Die Ashore".

I have loved this book for 20 years. A little pricey for a paperback, but I couldn't find a new copy anywhere else.

I absolutely love this book! The author does a great job. It's story that is both funny and romantic. Constance is young and she's learning th effects she can have on a guy through giving a look or a little bit of attention. The havoc she creates with all th guys is amusing. She isn't doing it to be mean spirited which would not have been enjoyable to read. She just doesn't know the proper way to act. Her dads reaction to it is amusing as well! At one point he says a prayer out loud in front of everyone at the dinner table, including one of the guys she likes, about her behavior. It was so funny!!! It's a must read!

When I was a child, I read this book over and over again. It is one of the best pieces of historical fiction I have read, as a child or an adult. Constance brings the struggles of the pilgrims at the Plimoth colony vividly to life, with both realism (given what the pilgrims struggled through) as well as tenderness, and a recognition that despite the struggles, life, death, and love went on. Although I am now a Yale undergraduate, this is a book I pick up to re-read over and over. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in historical fiction. And if you have already read Constance, make a point of reading The Tamarack Tree, also by Patricia Clapp, set in Vicksburg, Mississippi during the Civil War siege.

I would recommend this book to a 16+ year old girl. I am older but enjoyed a glimse into what life might have been like back then. My husband has recently discovered his family connection to Constance and Stephen Hopkins. Will pass on to my daughter.

A summary of the review on StrategyPage:'Appearing a decade after the prior edition, this fourth version of Clodfelter’s massive reference guide to modern conflicts extends coverage down through 2015 and includes extensive revisions to much of the older material. Entries for each conflict range from brief summaries to multi-page essays offering extensive details on forces involved, casualties, and so forth. As is the case with all such works, there’s more war and conflict than can be covered in one volume. Clodfelter sometimes stretches the meaning of “war” or “armed conflict", e.g.with an entry for the 1844 “Nativist Riots” in the U.S., while covering some important “colonial” wars with a line or two, and wholly missing the 2004-2005 campaign by Bhutan against an invasion by Indian radical Maoists. Despite this, on the whole Clodfelter’s effort is excellent and far more inclusive of non-Western conflicts than most similar works.'For the full review, see StrategyPage

On pg 746, it lists the Battle of Kobani. The battle began on the 15th/16th of September 2014, not the 20th of September, as stated in the book. The Iraqi Peshmerga did not come into Kobani on the 23rd of September, bringing themselves from Iraq into Syria, as the book says (they were brought in at the end of October, but as a force providing heavy weapons to the YPG). In the Kobani excerpts alone, I think it is safe to say wikiepdia is more correct and has better citation sources than this book. I would not trust its other articles.

I enjoy the subject matter of these Hudgins novels. However the ebook translation screws up the grammar something fierce. I suppose it has something to do with scanning. That's why I give it four stars instead of five.

A very good western ranch story of the trials and troubles that were present during that time period. It has all the drama of a good read.

Love the way this ranch and the people that ran it operates. It was tough to be an orphan back in those days.

This is easy reading and uncomplicated. It is a book you can read for enjoyment. The characters are clear and likable.

IO really enjoy the books by this author. They are exciting and keep yo involved and yet are good clean reading with a Christian background. I recommend him especially for good western reading.

I have read a lot of books on this subject, and this book has a lot to offer. In many ways the concepts are new and fresh, thinking about ourselves differently, accepting our tendencies and who we are, understanding why we do what we do... This book tries to change the way you think, and thereby save a lot of effort we normally spend trying to change partners.But I have to remove 1 big star for the writing style. This material is not necessarily the easiest to digest, and on almost every page there is a word I have to look up. And even when I know what she said, I would ask, "Why would she say it that way? Why would she take something important and say it in the most difficult to understand way?" Let me take a single random passage:"The social critic Camille Paglia sees this rise in domination and submission as a collective fantasy that tweaks the rough spots of our egalitarian culture. It seems to me that rituals of domination and submission are a subversive way to put one over on a society that glorifies control, belittles dependency, and demands equality."Do I know what she meant? Well, yeah...mostly. But there are many better ways to deliver the material and make it more accessible, rather than losing me in the weeds of the writing itself.Excellent book, excellent material, unnecessarily complicated writing style.

Love what she said when asked how many times she'd been married: "Four. To the same man." This woman and mom and wife and therapist and speaker of 6 languages not only reinvented herself to stay hot for her man but to stay interesting for her two teen children living with mom/dad as a foursome. Yes, sex as a family value. From Belgium and Israel, her husband and two kids live or lived together when she wrote this from their flat in NYC. It's one thing to write how to stay hot for each other while married; it's another to pull it off and then even be able to communicate the complex system that makes it possible.I gave one to a peer guy friend and one to my son. It's that good and helpful. They say when the student is ready the teacher will appear. Don't read this book too soon. Or too late either. But buy three copies and get ready. I say.

There are many brilliant observations in this book, but I would also recommend the many lectures that the author has given which appear on YouTube, including her TED talks. I listened to a few before reading the book and a few after reading the book. It's funny how they made so much more sense after reading the book.

I think there is tremendous value in Perelman's insight that intimacy--marked by safety, closeness, and familiarity--and desire--marked by space, mystery, and risk-taking--are two distinct things. They not necessarily be opposed for many of us (thank God), but they are not the same, and need to be cultivated differently if we want to have a long term relationship marked by both loving security and erotic passion.

Anyone who desires or is in a long-term relationship should read this. This book had me hooked, I whizzed through it in about 2 days. Hugely enlightening and puts words to something I've always noticed but could never quite put my finger on. The gist is that love demands closeness, but erotic desire needs space to thrive. For modern American couples, who often have their lives so intertwined, this can lead to problems. Perel explores this seeming contradiction and sheds light on how modern couples can become aware of this and mediate it. This book is packed with wisdom. Enlightening read!

I absolutely love the Thomas and Friend encyclopedia. I wish they gave more information on the trains and vehicles each characters are based on. I also wish they had more information on the Island of Sodor and all the wonderful place on the island like Brendam Docks and Knapford station along with a map of the island of sodor showing where all these places are.Â

I can't say enough great things about this encyclopedia. Bought this for my son who LOVES Thomas & Friends. Nice colorful pictures for you to enjoy with brief descriptions of each train. This book will provide hours of entertainment. We've come across every train that we see on tv however we couldn't find one the newest trains that we bought. Rebecca was nowhere to be found :(

My son loves this book! It has fun facts about many of the favorite characters, that keep my toddler interested night after night. I wish the book was a little more comprehensive (there are lots of Thomas characters my son loves who are missing from the book) - but this is the best compilation I've found so far. Great quality too - this has survived the impatient hands of a toddler for several months, although now I've surely jinxed myself!

My son loves this book. I choose to buy the library edition because I had saw that the other version had a train included but the packaging was left at the top of the book making it bulky. I am very pleased with this purchase and would recommend for any child that loves Thomas.

We pre-ordered this book for our 4yr old who loves anything to do with Thomas. We love DK books and when we saw they were making an encyclopedia of Thomas - we got excited! The book is well made, great quality, wonderful photos and fun facts. We would have loved to see all the engines be included. Because it was advertised as an "encyclopedia" we just expected more.

The book is well made with tons of contents. It's a lot of fun to read with my youngster. It also include other fun facts and life facts too, so it's not just the thomas. Strongly recommend it!

A magnificent book about an even more magnificent individual! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, every single page. Don't let the age of the writing dissuade you. As a fan of European history, I kept coming across Talleyrand's name in books covering the late 1700s and early 1800s. I decided it was time to learn about the man himself and am so pleased I found this book thanks to Amazon. He was arguably the most dominant individual in France during this time and certainly was able to succeed for a much longer period than anyone else. Now I just need to find an equally well-written book about Metternich ... if it exists. As for Talleyrand, do yourself a favor and read this book!

The conventional portrait of Talleyrand is one of a corrupt, amoral political turncoat who successfully negotiated every change in French government from Louis XVI to Louis Philippe. He may have been self-absorbed and he did enrich himself at every turn but Duff Cooper maintains that he was a man of principle whose political gymnastics were always motivated by what was in the best interest of the French nation. Agree with him or not, Cooper makes a compelling case and he writes beautifully.

Talleyrand was an extraodinary man—charming and smart and impossible. Duff Cooper writes beautifully and I came away from this biography in awe of the subject and very appreciative of the author. It is so much better than many of today’s biographies which often want to be definitive and think that the way to do that is to be exhaustive. This book gives you a sense of Talleyrand’s genius and complexity. An excellent read.

This very charitable memoir requires the reader to have a good understanding of the history of revolutionary and post-revolutionary France. The prose is quite striking and the subject would approve of its quick flourishes and decisive wit.

This book explained the ideas and wisdom of Talleyrand, overcoming some of my indignation that he would demand a bribe from American diplomats. Talleyrand did not change as much as the governments of France, and I had always wondered how Talleyrand survived so many changes in government. Talleyrand seems to have improved with age and experience.

There are few if any parallels to Charles-Maurice, Prince de Talleyrand, in the annals of diplomatic history. In modern times, there have been some examples of men who were able to somehow "dodge the raindrops" and serve for many years in high positions in tumultuous political environs. Anastas Mikoyan's ability to survive long and close proximity to Stalin is one notable instance; but he never possessed Talleyrand's gravitas and international influence, nor did he serve different, hostile regimes. No, Talleyrand is in a league of his own - more politically nimble and long-serving than even the satirical Vicar of Bray.In this classic 1932 biography by Duff Cooper (a picaresque political character in his own right), the legendary French Foreign Minister is treated with respect, almost reverence, and not without a touch of personal fondness. The author clearly does not see Talleyrand as Napoleon came to see him: as nothing but "dung in a silk stocking." Cooper constructs a portrait of Talleyrand based in large part on the diaries of men and women who mixed socially with the legendary statesman in the salons of Paris, London and elsewhere. I have found that such sources are most enlightening and allow the reader to gain a more nuanced perspective and human reflection of the subject. The picture of Talleyrand that emerges is one of a world-class charmer, a conversationalist nonpareil. One gets the sense that Talleyrand would succeed as well in early twenty-first century Washington as he did in early nineteenth century Paris.Much has been made of Talleyrand's unusual ability to survive the convulsions of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic period. Cooper suggests that he was sensitive to criticism on that account and defended his decision to serve such fundamentally different regimes this way: "At every epoch there is some good to be done or some harm to hinder; that is why, if one loves his country, on can, and in my opinion, one ought to, serve it under all the Governments that it adopts." A mode of thinking contemporary Democrats and Republicans might profit from.Cooper argues vigorously that Talleyrand was a man of a few deeply held positions on foreign policy, but perhaps little in the way of deeply held moral convictions. "He was not one who would die for his principles, nor even suffer serious inconvenience on their account, but he held to them with singular tenacity and was faithful to them - in his fashion." The overriding foreign policy issue that Talleyrand championed was peace and comity with England, France's historical nemesis. Cooper calls Talleyrand's position on England "fearlessly consistent" and ultimately far-sighted and sound. "He had welcomed it before the Revolution, he had striven for it by the side Mirabeau, he had pursued it under the Feuilant Government and under the Girondins, from exile he had urged it upon Danton, during the Directorate he had endeavored to return it, and under the Consulate he had promoted it at the Peace of Amiens; he had remembered it at Erfurt and supported it against Napoleon in good and in evil days." Talleyrand was not physically brave, but he was unflappable on positions of policy in the face of the toughest negotiations or personal invective, and the desire for a stable peace with England was a stance from which he never wavered.Talleyrand led a crowded and improbable life, yet I found the most arresting chapter of this biography to be the last. In the sunset of his life, this octogenarian ci-devant priest, this married bishop and lecher, this revolutionary ex-communicated by Rome, embarked upon a slow and thoughtful return to faith, literally signing his peace with the Catholic Church just hours before his death. It was a final peace treaty of sorts that absorbed as much time, deliberation, and posturing as any he had crafted in the realm of international relations.

In the main I thoroughly enjoyed this biography. There were some print as well as some chronological errors that should have been noted prior to publication (i.e., Alexander died in 1825, not 1852.). Thanks
