Full disclosure: I'm a huge Neil Plakcy fan, so any new book by him has me all a-tremble with anticipation. Most of all I have loved his "Mahu" series, the title based on Hawai'ian slang for "gay." His newest entry into that long series moves Kimo Kanapa'aka in a direction that might not please everybody; but for this middle-aged gay father of two, it went right to where I live.Plakcy's murder mystery plots are always interesting, and always tied somehow into the unique culture of Hawai'i, the US's most distant state. Plakcy's style is matter-of-fact, like Kimo himself. There is poetry in his descriptions of Oahu's physical realities - both beautiful and ugly; but Plakcy's prose is not about description. What really makes his books a joy to read is the people you meet along the way.In "Natural Predators" Kimo is facing two dilemmas that swirl in and out of the murder investigation: whether to embrace a possible move with his investigative partner, Ray Donne, into a collaboration with the local FBI office; and whether to tackle, with his life-partner, Mike Riccardi, the challenges of parenthood. Both of these possibilities mean major changes to the happy, comfortable life that he and Mike have created. And Plakcy's particular skill is making the reader care as much about these personal issues as we care about the murders - disturbing and confusing murders - taking place around him.The greatest treasure in Plakcy's books is everybody else - all that extended group of co-workers, acquaintances, friends and family with which the narrative is richly spiced. The sprawling metropolis of Honolulu seems like a big village, full of characters who are all, somehow, interconnected by the complexities of Hawai'ian culture, regardless of their ethnicity. And Kimo's family is at the center of it all. His relationship with his parents and siblings, and his evolving partnership with Mike and his family, allow us not only insight into the ethnic diversity of "being Hawai'ian," but into the core concept of "ohana," the extended network of relationships that, to Kimo, means family. While this book might signal the end of the series, there are certainly unexplored avenues and unsolved crimes in paradise. But I finished this novel with an even deeper sense that the Kanapa'aka clan - and Kimo and Mike themselves - are folks that I don't want to lose touch with, and very much hope I'll get to meet again.
One or the pleasures in reading a Pakcy series is that he lets the characters grow in their relationships. In this edition, Police Detective Kimo and Fire Investigator Mike are wrestling with whether to have children. They both work long hours in dangerous jobs, but Mike is an only child who wants a child while Kimo is part of a large family and happy with his status. One teen that Kimo has worked with in his gay teen counseling group has been an unwitting witness to the first in a series of murders of old people who were involved in the push for statehood of Hawaii. Kimo and Mike decide to take him in not only to help a teen in a bad situation but to see how parenting works for them. Additionally, they are asked to father a child for a lesbian couple. There is a lot of back and forth on being donors as they would wish to be part of the resulting child’s life. One learns some of the controversy involving statehood in 1959 in this volume. As usual in Plakcy books, there is good dialogue, a believable plot, and insights into the locale, in this case Oahu. It is not as erotic as most of his books. This book foreshadows changes in the work life of Kimo and his detective partner Ray, but we will have to wait for the next volume for that.
I really enjoy this 8th addition to the Mahu series. The crime mystery is well paced and tight and the connection to the history of Hawaii is a revelation and an added bonus. It is not so much the identity of the murderer that I am after than the detailed investigation that I enjoyed. On the drama side, I love how well Kimo's friends, family members are woven into the story and Kimo's relationship with Mike has come a long way. It is wonderful to see this couple flourishing and ready to take the next important step. I also love how Kimo's character continues to develop. This could be a sastifactory end to the series but I will definitely love it to continue as Kimo has much more to offer in his crime solving and personal side. Also I appreciate that sex is fade to black because plot and characters should take precedence in a book which is foremost a crime mystery, even if the writer feels the need to give us some action in the bonus chapter, lol.
First I have to tell you that I am a Neil Plakcy fan. I had been waiting for him to write another in this detective Kimo series. They are so great. Have a sister who lives in Hawaii so his descriptions of local areas and terms are fun to read. The Natural Predator really moves along well. The murders seem to take a back seat to the characters-which is alright with me since Kimo and Mike and friends are interesting. and by now like old family. If you haven't read any of Plakcy"s Hawaian mysteries start at the beginning and watch the saga unfold. Hope the author doesn't keep us waiting as long for the next book. Light, heartwarming characters, smooth reading, and worth your time. ENJOY
I don't remember how I first discovered this series, but I've enjoyed it very much. The series has always included a strong family and friends component, but this latest entry seems to have shifted the balance more toward that, leaving the actual mystery feeling like the subplot. While I enjoy the family stories, my impression was that the detective/mystery story suffered a bit. It's still a good read, and as always, Plakcy writes well-crafted characters.
An outstanding novel by a writer who seems to me to just get better with each new book. In character and plot development, and just simple writing style, Neil Plakcy has matched or exceeded his previous best in this book.
I have read most all this series, some books twice, and can say that Kimos story is wonderful I truly enjoy Neil Pkakcy's writing
I read everything this man writes. He is a very prolific author and his varied stories are always entertaining and worth the read. I bet this would be an interesting person to chat with.
