The First World War is often overshadowed by the Second World War and future conflicts such as Vietnam and Afghanistan but this should not diminish the fact that it is far more interesting than those later wars. Ww1 created the modern world we live in today and it impact can still be felt 100 years later.

Incredible, awesome! Even at my age, ahem, I am not as knowledgeable of the War to End all Wars as I’d like to be. This is a standard to attain, quality with word one all the way! I love these publications by the Smithsonian, having several in my collection. The historical photos recall the many views of war with intense emotion along with clear and concise discriptions and narratives. One not to miss!

A recommended book by the Wall Street Journal, it was the perfect gift for my good friend serving in the military. We spent more time discussing the subjects in the book than engaging in party conversation. I look forward to the Smithsonian's book on WW II.

While it is impossible to cover a massive World War in a short book, this is a good summary well illustrated as are all DK series books

This is just an amazing book for war readers! The only fault was that the printing was too small to see. It was a gift purchased earlier for Christmas. Can't return. Great coffee table book.

The book was bigger then I expect it but I love it and it is a gift for my dad the price was a great deal

This book is really big. As in it has a lot of pages, about 350, and it is heavy. The pictures are beautiful and it covers WWI from beginning to end. It is great for kids and adults. Any history buff would love to have this on his shelf.

Enrique Olvera graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1999. In 2000, at the age of 24, he opened Pujol in Mexico City. Perhaps the worst cookbook I own. The food photos are well done, but the other photos are mediocre and not well printed. I doubt I'll pick up the book again and I would return it, except it's a perfect example of what not to do when designing a cookbook and is funny is a pathetic way.I don't believe there's a recipe I'll cook or a reference I'll use. Fussier than Thomas Keller recipes with unavailable ingredients, different page sizes in the book making an awkward read and it represents a truly warped view of food and cooking. Culinary masochism perhaps would be a way of looking at it. The author opines that "Michael Bras is one of the chef's I most admire. I'm still amazed at his idea of separately cooking and sauteing thirty different vegetables to make one of the most important dishes in modern cuisine; his Gargouillou." I guess if you just had 29, it would taste odd. Not quite worth the giggle for the money,

Just received this book a day ago and flipping through my first impression is that it's a very good cook book. It's geared towards experienced culinary professional in my opinion. amazing photos of Mexico and the plates also. I really hope to visit Chef Enrique's restaurant in Mexico City one day.

Beautiful photos....minimal instruction. Tonight I attempted the "Mother Mole" recipe. Not good. I spent over $70 for the Oxacaan chiles in this recipe. The recipe says to roast all the ingredients aside from the oil and water at 450 degrees for 8 minutes. At 4 minutes in I opened my accurate Wolf convection oven and smoke came pouring out. I wasn't sure if this was normal....but I continued on only to find after the tedious work of measuring all the other ingredients was a total waste. Those chilies were torched at that overly high temperature. The mole tasted like a sour lemon. So I did it again. Carefully roasting the remaining Chihacles at 350 degrees instead of the insane 450 degrees originally instructed. Even after this the sauce was bitter. Not pleasant at all. So I started looking up mole recipes online...found Bobby Flay (everything I've ever cooked from his recipes are stellar) called for ,much more "sugar": many more raisins, honey and molasses. So I started liberally adding the Flay sweeteners. Much better but still slightly bitter and too spicy. Don't get me wrong....I love spicy food but for most folk this mole would dish out way too much heat.. So why doesn't the recipe instruct whether or not the seeds inside the chilies should be removed or not? Why doesn't the recipe state whether or not the nuts should be raw or toasted? After going through this nightmare tonight of making the mole negro....I highly doubt I will waste my time making the 2nd red mole recipe that goes with this. I've made mole before and it was delicious. This recipe was a drain on my bank account and hugely disappointing.

Great book! Although I suggest you watch Netflix Chef Table episode on Enrique Olivera so you can see what kind of recipe's you will find in the book. It is mostly a twist on traditional Mexican food with a more contemporary style. Enrique is innovating Mexican food and changing the way most people think about Mexican food. It is not only tacos and tortas there is a much more complex and beautiful side to Mexican food and this book explores that. Plus, there are beautiful pictures!

Bought this book because the photography was done by Araceli Paz and she doesn't disappoint. But the recipe were a nice surprise.The layout of the book is very nice, well organised and even if I don't plan on making a full recipe, I most certainly will do some of the sauces and star using some ingredients than before I only pass by.Kudos again to the photography, we had seen a lot of tacos and tortillas pictures by now and Enrique and Araceli show a different side, modern, but rooted in tradition.

We visited Cosme and loved it, then had to have the book. Then we went to Atla. The production quality and content is suburb.

Great photos and regional history. Straight forward recipes, with a lot of flavor.

Extremely happy with the purchase of this book. There is a elegant simplicity in the manner which Olvera introduces the flavors to the readers. To people who aren't real cooks it may seem daunting at first, but if one takes a closer look, the techniques and ingredients are on par with a traditional Mexican cooking. Yes there are different nuances as to be expected, but the tradition is all there. I would definitely suggest this book if one wants a better understanding of culture first, and food secondly. Great job on the book and the publisher Phaidon allowing the Chef to use his voice!

Katie Jacobs is beyond talented. This book is simply gorgeous and not only is it expertly written and photographed but the recipes are easy. It's easy to get lost in the pages. Great gift especially for a bride.

I have followed Katie on Instagram and her blog for awhile and so I was SOOOO excited when I heard she was putting out a book. The book is absolutely beautiful!!! I think I may need to order two books though ...one to actually use as a cookbook and the other to use as a coffee table book ...since it is so pretty! My dream would be to meet Katie and actually cook with her in person some time. She seems like the sweetest person ever!

I’ve been a fan of Rhys Ford’s books for years. In this fifth, but not final, episode we have the band going on the road for the first time. Crossroads Gin is comprised of the two survivors of the original Sinner’s Gin band: Miki St. John and Damien Mitchell, whose resurrections occupied the first two books in the series. Then we have the two new members of the cast, whose stories were told in the next two books: Forest Ackerman and Rafael Andrade. Romantically paired with these four gay rockers and their various psychological problems are three of the redoubtable Morgan clan; Kane, Connor and Quinn, along with a cousin of theirs, Sionn Murphy.A precis of half the band appears early in the book: “They stood should to shoulder, a patchwork cobble of a broken band resurrected by Damien’s dream, a fallen bassist who’d lost everything and found himself again in his life’s ashes, and a session drummer who’d never imagined he’d leave the safe confines of the recording studio he’d inherited from the old musician who’d taken him in.”It’s almost as if the four earlier books have been an elaborate set-up to the big road trip of book five. The fact that this book left me sort of unsatisfied is a disappointment. In spite of the fact that the band covers a massive tour of the United States, rocking the house in various clapped-out venues in every corner of the nation, nothing much seems to happen. Sure, we learn how they love their music—and that is vividly painted with Ford’s over-the-top writing and passionately described visuals. And there is an ongoing mystery woven into the storyline, with attacks by mysterious strangers that seem somehow to be linked to the past in ways as yet undiscovered. But most of the book seems to be intense, angsty, neurotic interactions between the various band members and their lovers. Although Ford is eloquent and ardent in her presentation of the guys’ emotional turmoil, it’s getting a little old after five books’ worth. Her repetitive themes of fear and self-doubt remind me of the tumultuous over-thinking that is also a trademark of T.J. Klune’s “Otter and Bear” novels.And the Morgan clan are here in full force —including the patriarch and matriarch, Donal and Brigid—relentless in their love of these broken rockers. There are moments of intense sweetness that come out of the Morgan family’s particular pushiness; but between the endless angst and aggressive affection I found it all rather exhausting.And now I have to confess, I found myself becoming impatient with the series’ refusal to discuss the pink elephant in the room: homophobia in the rock world. Crossroads Gin, and Sinner’s Gin before it, were hard-rock bands. No bubble-gum popsters or boy-band cuties; these guys are hardcore rock musicians. And they’re doing a 6000 mile road trip as an all-gay rock band, members of the most homophobic part of the music industry, known for its loud physical excess and relentless hetero posturing. So, not a single slur, not a whisper of the raging homophobia that must exist in at least SOME of the scores of back-alley venues they visit? Really? Is the fact that they’re gay not known at all (which in itself would be a problem for me—a closeted gay rock band, which is not the way they’re presented). Seems to me, after all of this at-home growth and emotional development, the road trip would be where Crossroads Gin would face the realities of the world they’re going back into.I was just tired when I finished this book. I actually cringed a little when Edie, the band’s manager, walked in on the last page and dropped the cliff-hanger bomb that opened the door to the next book. I know I’m going to buy it and read it, because I’m a faithful fan and an obsessive completer-of-series. But for the first time, I’m not sure how much I’m looking forward to book 6.

I can't tell you how much I love these characters. I actually thought this series had wrapped and I am so glad to see Rhys Ford moving along with it. The story itself is almost like a threaded series of vignettes held together by an over arching mystery. Which is a somewhat dangerous ploy for a writer to try this far into a series but it works really well, mostly because it enhances the sense of wandering dIsconnect bands experience on tour. It also allows the story to highlight the private moments of all the characters without it being disjointed or forced.So, another gem by Rhys Ford. This one definitely can't stand alone very well, however. You'll want to start with Book 1, Sinner's Gin. They are all great, so you may as well.

Of all the Moegans and the one Murphy -Finnegan hooking up with our musicians, the only couple I've had issues wirh (and found I still am not excited about) would be Forest and Connor. Their book was so full of inconsistencies and far-fetched situations and outcomes I couldn't get past that I also couldn't reconcile them as an acceptable, gay couple. Sorry - Connors whole persona is wrong for Forest; they don't MATCH in my head. Forest is uneducated, unworldly, and inexperienced while Connor is quite a bit older than him, a S.W.A.T.Lieutenant which means he's highly intelligent, physical, and has experienced considerably more, and we're to accept that he's going to be content with someone like Forest the rest of his life? In reality, marriages between couples having such diverse backgrounds & personalities don't last. Physical attraction, while important, isn't enough once there's down time. There's no common interest, intelligence level - nice fairytale though.Rafes's scenes of pain and struggle were on point and well written, as were Damien and Miki's internal conflicts. Miki, Damien and Forest (this still makes me gag) got lively, romantic, got sexy scenes. But Rafe and Quinn did not. ???All in all, not a horrible book that I would enjoyed more, even perhaps have loved, had Connor and Forest not been featured so much. Two and a half stars.

Latest book in a series I love. This is book 5 and I recommend you read the first 4 before you read this one.Sinners Gin is turned in to Crossroads Gin and are touring, but trouble always finds them.All the band members have their own ghosts and troubled past to struggle with and in the van and motels all the baggage comes to the surface. The authors way of describing the connections between the characters are so wonderful that I have tears in my eyes more than one time.It's no secret that I loved the previous books in this series and this book is just as good. The story is good and I really feel like I know the characters. And OMG how long to the next book? Because I'm so exited to see what's next for the members of Crossroads Gin and their loved ones.If you haven't read any of the book I recommend strongly that you start reading because this is a series I'm never going to regret reading.

Excellent story. Miki's voice is as vivid and unique as always, and we get to visit with each of the Crossroads boys.There is a bit of a 'middle book' feel, clearly the story arc is building up to something that doesn't happen here. But the growth of much loved characters, and the colorful descriptions, keep the story engaging.If you haven't read this series before, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning. If you already love the series, this book has plenty of everyone's favorite feral rock god, so what more could you want?

I really get irritated when I read a book and discover I read the same book 20 years ago and just bought an updated version. I read this book a long time ago, before the case was solved, and apparently the authors repackaged and updated it. I should have investigated a little further before I bought it. With that said, there was a great deal of detail presented here, which was interesting, to a point. After a while, it just got bogged down, mostly because the investigation went nowhere for a lot of years. The final chapter that updated the case left a lot to be desired and was rather anti-climatic, more like a wikipedia entry than a satisfying denoument. I found myself quite frustrated with the tunnel vision of the investigators and the many mistakes made, but that was a consequence of the time I suppose, when forensic technology was rather primitive. The book was okay, laden with a little too much detail, but in spite of having read it before, it kept my interest most of the way through. If you don't know much about the case, you will find it interesting.

I moved to the Seattle area in the mid-to-late 70s, and was in high school through the early 80s there. And I remember well the Green River Killer case; it seemed that by 1984 another body was found every other day, and of course the local news covered every minute of it.And I've read several books about this case, some terrific and some, well, not so terrific. "The Riverman: Ted Bundy and I Hunt for the Green River Killer" -- probably more about Mr. Bundy than Gary Ridgway but a terrific read by Robert Keppel -- "Chasing the Devil: My Twenty-Year Quest to Capture the Green River Killer" -- good but probably overly self-congratulatory by Dave Reichert (I think he overvalued his importance to the investigation most likely) -- and "Green River Running Red" -- an absolutely dismal effort by Ann Rule when she was still a good enough writer that she should've known better. And now I've read "The Search for the Green River Killer: The True Story of America's Most Prolific Serial Killer" (SGRK).Well, kind of.You see, I've only read about three-fourths of SGRK, more than I probably should have, and have finally given up. While it is surely well written -- I believe the authors were newspaper men in their day, after all -- the biggest problem: it spends too much of its time discussing the politics in Seattle while hunting for the Green River Killer (GRK) and not enough time discussing the murders, MO, and maybe even signature, of Gary Ridgway. And while Mr. Ridgway wasn't arrested until the early 2000s following a DNA match on a victim, it is not necessary to have a suspect to know his MO and signature. After all, profilers determine and use that information during the initial part of an investigation in order to build a profile of the UNSUB. And then that profile is generally used for many purposes, but one important one: it helps narrow the suspect list to a manageable number. Maybe the Seattle Police Department should have built a decent profile right out of the gate. But then again, maybe the writers of this book should have written a book that held my interest.And all of this is really a shame as SGRK starts out very well, but somewhere around the mid-point you might think to yourself, "You know, I really don't care about these politics anymore. What I really want to know: who were the victims and what did the police do to try to catch the killer?" Yes, maybe it shows that the politicians in Seattle were political, and maybe it shows that the police department were incompetent police officers, but after awhile I just didn't care anymore.I still would like to find a really good book about strictly the Green River Killer case that is mostly about that serial killer, and so far, Mr. Keppel's is the best for me out of those I've read But once again, that book is mostly about Mr. Bundy and somewhat about the GRK so it's kind of a "combo" effort as it discusses both "The Ted Murders" and "The Green River Killer." I still highly recommend it though as Mr. Keppel's books are always really strong.Well, if you're a true-crime aficianado like I am, and in particular, if you like reading books about serial killers, I'll have to go with a pass today on "The Search for the Green River Killer." I could've probably finished it. But why?

...and society's total disregard for prostitutes, whom most of society considers less than human, and disposable.This book chronicles all the Green River Killer's murders, and the ensuing investigation, including the time a witness led the police to the murderer's house, only to have the police ignore the tip.Most of the events happen early in the history of serial killer science and advanced forensics, but the book paints a damning story on police incompetence.This book has been updated to include the subsequent capture, confession, and sentencing of the serial killer more than a decade after the task force hunting him had all but disbanded. It was advanced in DNA science that eventually led to his capture, not any brilliant deductive work, despite the police having had ample clues almost from the start.This book is a very good read. It does lack something, though, which is why I stopped at 4 stars. I think it tries, but fails, to humanize the victims, falling into the same bias of considering prostitutes as things.

This book was very detailed, to the point of being pretty long and drawn out. I did learn things I had not known. This is the third Green River Killer book I have read, so that's saying a lot. The book is from the view of the police and FBI, but not just Dave Reichert's view.

This book was interesting and well written. I was both fascinated and extremely angered that competition among the various police departments and units, along with political maneuvering, greatly delayed the apprehension of this subhuman monster. Ridgway could have been stopped in 1987.

The authors did a lot of research for this book. It didn't hold my interest, though. I don't care about the office politics, which accounted for several pages in each chapter. Ms. Rule's story ratcheted up the tension in a way this book doesn't. Who died? Who killed them? How did the cops catch him?

This book gives a lengthy description of the intense process that took place to bring this killer to justice. Well written story that keeps the reader involved from beginning to end.

Boring. If this shows up for free, don't bother. This has all the excitement of a colonoscopy. Very little is devoted to any semblance of investigation. Worst book I have read in 10 years.
