In general I enjoy sports romance, and I favor hockey romance the most. One of my favorite hockey romance authors is Sarina Bowen. The Brooklyn Bruisers is a fun hockey romance series, and Sarina Bowen's latest, Overnight Sensation, is so much fun! There is hockey, there are hot hockey players, and there are wonderfully strong women characters! Jason Castro is definitely a hot alpha hockey player, and a player in general! Actually, he's a nice guy who doesn't want a relationship. Heidi, is a determined young woman, working in the Bruisers organization to try to prove her worth to her father. Jason sees Heidi as just another intern - but an attractive, funny young woman. They've gotten to know each somewhat, and are definitely attracted to each other. Now the story gets interesting, as we learn more about Jason and Heidi, and they get to know each other MUCH better. As we enjoy the story, we also get to enjoy the hockey (a win-win for us).I love that Heidi is a such a strong, determined young woman, even though she has some issues and some growing to do (don't we all). Jason also brings his complications to deal with (thus the story), but I like that he's a nice guy. A strong cast of supporting characters, many of whom we already know well, adds to the story. I'm hoping to see more of these characters in future books, especially Silas - he has so much potential as the lead in his own story!I highly recommend this book.

I loved this book! I have only been reading Sarina Bowen's work for about a year now but she has quickly become an author that I trust to deliver great romances and she totally delivered with this book. This book is the fifth book in the Brooklyn Bruisers series but it was the first book from the series that I have read and it worked well on its own. Of course, now I am ready to go back and get the other books read since I liked this one so much. This story is all about Heidi and Jason. Heidi, an intern, lets her inhibitions go for one night and wants to hook up with the team's sexy hockey player, Jason. Unfortunately, she has way too much to drink and ends up sleeping it off at his house instead. It wouldn't be a big deal except for the photo of them together that is making the rounds and the fact that Heidi is actually the commissioner's daughter. As the pair spends more and more time with each other, they decide that they just can't stay away from each other.Heidi and Jason were both great characters. Heidi has lived a rather sheltered and spoiled life. She knows this but she also isn't afraid of hard work. I liked how she was willing to do what was needed to get what she wants. It seemed that no matter how terrible the job was she approached it with the best attitude possible. Jason doesn't do relationships and hasn't for a long time. He is more of a one night stand kind of guy but he wants more with Heidi. It was great learning about Jason's past and finding out what he was really thinking.I loved these two together! They just seemed to fit perfectly together. They had fantastic chemistry with each other and there are quite a few sexy moments in the story. I liked the way that he looked out for her and vice versa. They both showed that they were willing to stand up for each other and just be there for support when necessary. It does take Jason some time to completely open up to Heidi about his past but I liked watching them work through everything.I would highly recommend this book to others. This was a great romance with fantastic characters. I loved the fact that there was quite a bit of hockey worked into the story and the side characters were just as great as Jason and Heidi. I ended up reading this entire book in a single day because I literally could not put it down. I cannot wait to read more from this amazing author!I received a digital review copy of this book from the author/publicist.

LOVED this book!!! Heidi Jo might be my favorite heroine from this series. The girl is fierce and funny and knows her hockey!! Castro is beautifully broken and ridiculously smart and you just can’t help but root for him. His friendship with Silas is definitely a highlight of the book and I absolutely loved the way Heidi just fit with them. I can’t wait to see what the three of them get into in the future :)Favorite Quotes:“She’s still talking about the game, and I’m distracted by the way her voice vibrates through my soul.”“At the top of the steps she tugs on the handle of her giant suitcase, barely clearing the ground before she yanks it down a stair. All I can picture is Heidi squashed like a bug under its weight at the bottom of the stairs. ‘Wait up!’ Silas and I both yell at the same moment and then run for it.”

The Jefferson Bible, Smithsonian Edition: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, by Thomas Jefferson

Review

LIBRARY JOURNAL, Starred ReviewThis is a painstakingly produced full-color facsimile of the original volume that Jefferson created, now at the Smithsonian, where it received top-level conservation treatment prior to its high-resolution reproduction here. Jefferson created his version of the New Testament by cutting and pasting from Greek, Latin, French, and English printed texts of the Gospels, which he placed in four parallel columns and accompanied with his marginal notes. This edition also contains two essays: "The History of the Jefferson Bible," in which curators at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History explain Jefferson's intent and his methods, and an essay on the volume's extensive conservation. The passages that Jefferson selected and pasted together present a much-edited, single chronological account of Jesus's life, teachings, and death—ending with Jesus's burial and avoiding redundancies. The passages are those that Jefferson deemed to be supportable by reason. The "History" essay draws parallels between the way Jefferson revised Virginia's laws and the way he revised the Bible. VERDICT Jefferson's Bible has been published before, but never in full facsimile with all its contents. With great cultural importance for all readers from preteens through scholars in American studies, biblical studies, or the Enlightenment, as well as general readers. Also a handsome gift.—Carolyn M. Craft, formerly with Longwood Univ., Farmville, VABOOKLISTThe most famous single book in America was recently taken apart and put back together to retard its further deterioration. In the process, it was digitally photographed cover to cover, which is why this edition exists. Better than those based on normal photography, this full-color reproduction of The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth Extracted Textually from the Gospels in Greek, Latin, French & English, as its compiler, Thomas Jefferson, calls it on the handwritten title page, shows what it really looks like. As the three authors of the accompanying essays on the history and the conservation of the DIY parallel-text edition concur, its tidiness is a tribute to the third president’s steady hand and keen eye at age 77. Intellectually, it embodies his rationalist respect for Christianity as a moral system, not a religion. Excluding everything miraculous in the Gospels, thereby sifting, Jefferson said, “diamonds” from “a dunghill,” it establishes that one Founding Father, at least, was not a biblical inerrantist. A lovely addition to thoroughgoing Americana collections.— Ray OlsonCHOICEIn 1820, former president Thomas Jefferson completed The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth. Popularly known as "Jefferson's Bible," it comprises 82 pages, each with the Greek, Latin, French, and English texts of the New Testament passages that Jefferson viewed as authentic purveyors of Jesus's life and ethical teachings. Jefferson literally cut and pasted this material onto blank sheets of paper. Casting out all passages that were, in his opinion, contrary to reason, he ended up with the one form of religion in which he believed. The largest part of this 2011 book is an exquisitely reproduced full-color facsimile of this older work--the result of painstaking efforts by conservators at the Smithsonian and elsewhere, described in considerable detail in a chapter titled "Conservation." A preceding chapter, "History of the Jefferson Bible," puts this work within the context of Jefferson's life and the lives of contemporaries such as Benjamin Rush, Thomas Paine, and Joseph Priestley. Everything in this volume shows great care and erudition, and it deserves a place in almost every library. Nonetheless, readers might wish that more attention had been paid to the overall teachings of Jefferson's Bible and their influence on subsequent generations upto today. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through researchers/faculty; general readers. --L. J. Greenspoon, Creighton University

I had always heard about the Jefferson Bible. When it became available in an ebook, it was the time for me to read it. It's interesting. When you consider that Jefferson's original book was a cut and glue book, it is amazing that we can see what he did. Jefferson was a true genius and ahead of his time in many ways. I'm so glad this treasure survived so we can enjoy it.

If you like top quality books, the Smithsonian Edition is beautiful. If you just want to know about Jefferson's Bible, there are less expensive options that should satisfy your interest.

Jefferson's genius goes without saying, and many of his thoughts and writings merit that title...certain less-than-flattering issues about his life notwithstanding. This book, however, deserves special mention due to its uniqueness and frankly the controversy it fosters even now - controversy to the extent Jefferson himself didn't allow it to be published in his lifetime, and for a man who's life many times revolved around and even thrived on controversy that itself says a lot."To the corruptions of Christianity I am indeed opposed; but not to the genuine precepts of Jesus himself. I am a Christian, in the only sense he wished any one to be; sincerely attached to his doctrines, in preference to all others; ascribing to himself every human excellence; & believing he never claimed any other."This quote, taken from a letter Jefferson wrote to Benjamin Rush, very accurately and succinctly portrays Jefferson's opinion on the subject, and lends a great deal toward understanding the underlying perspective of the book as well as his motivation for writing it.The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth (Jefferson's own title, which later became known as simply "The Jefferson Bible") was Jefferson's attempt at distilling the essence of the teachings of Christ and his life (as presented in the four gospels of the New Testament) into a more coherent form, that is, according to chronology, without needless repetition, and without reference to superstition or miracles; Jefferson "edited" the bible by literally cutting and pasting the contents of the four Gospels accordingly. This "just the facts, ma'am" approach really provides a unique - and quite frankly refreshing - look at Christianity. I would perhaps describe it as very "accessible", and goes a long way toward revealing to the religious and non-religious alike why Christ matters and why his life and teachings, despite being hopelessly manipulated and twisted, have given rise to one of the worlds dominant religions. In fact, at the risk of offending some I would say that for Christians this book will reacquaint them with the true reasons their beliefs carry the name of Christ, whatever their doctrinal or denominational flavor, and perhaps even expose the gulf between what Christ actually taught versus the indoctrination they've possibly received via their respective "Christian" church. For non-Christians, it presents a credible and admirable case for honestly respecting a philosophy whose simple goodness and purity is rivaled only by its profound corruption at the hands of a list of religious denominations that now totals literally in the tens of thousands.Though I am not religious this book made a tremendous impression on me, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it, even going so far as to say: If Christianity were limited only to this the world would probably be a much better place.

I was very hesitant to spend so much money on this text when there are cheaper options on Amazon, but this Smithsonian edition exceeds expectations. The binding is beautiful and strong red leather, and the text even comes with a plastic protective cover. While the four languages are rather unnecessary for me, being a solely English speaker, the translations are implemented nicely. There are four columns on each page turn, two columns on the left page, two on the right page. The english is the last column, second on the right page, which makes it perfect for reading and turning the page and not having to switch to read from the left pages. The languages also show the life of the life of Jesus. First the life of Jesus was written in Greek, then Latin, then French, then English, so, in essence, you get a very anthropological presentation of the life of Jesus. This is the Jefferson Bible, which is the "life and morals of Jesus." It is not the Roman Catholic or Protestant bible. It is Jefferson's extractions on the moral teachings of Jesus. While it isn't the greatest text on ethics and morals, it is the best on the moral teachings that the life of Jesus has to offer. Great presentation by the Smithsonian and good read.

The seller transaction was perfect. No problem there.I've read a lot about Jefferson's cut and paste bible. This is a far cry from what I've read. This is more of a Cliff's Notes of the KJV of the current bible. Perhaps, there are many versions of Jefferson's bible. I really didn't like this one.

Beautiful art book containing wonderful poster images and history of magic.Just to clarify some of the differences between this and the earlier book:1. The original book had 650 pages, this edition has 544.2. This book is also in 3 languages (English, French and German). It still weighs around 14lbs. and is a large format art book. (Page height is nearly 15.5 inches). It's gorgeous, fairly heavy, and I'm happy to have it! Honestly, if I hadn't read about the earlier version of the book I would never guess this was "scaled down". It's still a very impressive book! From http://www.wildabouthoudini.com/2013/06/magic-1400s-1950s-released-in-new.htmlUPDATE: Re the differences between this and the larger edition, the following is from the editor of the book, Noel Daniel:"The smaller version is meant to offer readers the chance to discover the wonderful world of magic for a great price. To be able to offer a smaller version of the first edition (the larger book) at a trade price, we did need to reduce its physical size, which meant also reducing its page count and therefore the image count. Even though the smaller version is reduced by ca. 150 images of the original 900, it is still a fantastic, illustrated overview of 500 years of magic. This material has never been brought together in this manner before, and much of it has never been published. I spent many, many months personally visiting archives and incredible private collections to select these images from the original 30,000 that I gathered. Both the large and smaller versions are important publishing events in the history of magic. In terms of the images that I cut from the original larger size, of course, it was very hard, as all of the images mean a great deal to me. However, I tried to retain critical images that I felt readers would like to see, while cutting images that perhaps were repeated in some aspect or contained information that could be found in other images."

As my husband put it, this book (like some other monsters published by Taschen, such as one on Hieronymus Bosch) is more than a coffee-table book—it’s practically big enough to be the coffee table itself. I kid you not, it’s almost too heavy to lift. If you or someone you know is a fan of stage magic, though, it’s a must… and, at its current (2017) price on Amazon, quite a bargain (I think it used to be much more expensive).Although the book traces stage magic back to its medieval origins among traveling jugglers and purveyors of the cups-and-ball trick, it focuses on the entertainment’s heyday, the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The text, in English, French, and German, provides an interesting history, detailing the different performance venues, types of tricks, and individual magicians who were popular at different times. I think the book’s greatest draw, though, is the endless array of posters used to advertise the acts, all displayed in full color and many at full page size or even two pages (quite a spread, given the size of the book), and each extensively captioned in the same three languages. The best of these lithographed posters, some of them nine feet tall, are real works of art, full of floating ladies, grinning skeletons, and dancing devils… not to mention the dapper, tuxedoed magicians themselves. There are also a fair number of black-and-white photos of the magicians performing. In fairness, if you are not fascinated by stage magic, the book’s awkward size and tendency to repetition (not surprisingly, many of the posters are very similar to one another) may make it less than appealing. For anyone who does want to see the many skillful ways in which people can be fooled—and made to love every minute of it—though, I heartily recommend it.

This volume about magic is one I'll cherish. It was an absolutely incredible bargain at the Amazon price of about $50, NEW. It weighs over 10 pounds and measures more than 10 by 15 inches. It has about 500 pages of thick paper and comes in a heavy slipcase. It provides an insightful historical perspective on the evolution of the art of magic, specifically on the ways individual performers have adapted their images, acts, advertising, and venues to stay relevant in response to changes in society, technology, audiences, and the entertainment industry in general. Each chapter has a brief essay (which appears in English, German, and French), but the star of this book is the spectacular treasure trove of graphics (with captions also in all three languages). Chapter 7 has only about three paragraphs of text on Houdini, but over 20 pages of outstanding Houdini photos and posters advertising his performances. There are many rare photos and beautifully reproduced lithographs throughout. This gem of a book is a fabulous tribute to the fantastic world of magic and magicians, and a real visual treat.

What a great book. Massive in size, Full Color and B&W reproductions of the early Magicians and their advertisements, most from the "Golden Age" of magic. This book is so massive, you need a table to read it on, it definitely is not a lap book. Has many short chapters on the magicians, all wrote in Three different languages , but easy to follow. If interested in magicians and their past history told in photos and posters, this is for you.
