Original 08/31/13Great book that is well organized. Tons of useful information for all the hikes. Hike difficulty ratings are fairly accurate.Update 05/21/14My friend and I have now done about 15 hikes in this book so I thought I'd provide an update. We map all the hikes using MapMyRun app. Recently we realized the total trail mileage per hike is often accurate but the intermediate mileage from point A to point B along the trail is frequently wrong. Recommend you match up the book diagram to the gps tracking diagram on your cell phone to see if you miss a turn or not.Best trails in order are below. In general all the best trails seem to be south of STL. Highly recommend all the ones below for the fall. Pictures with changing leaf colors were spectacular from the lookout points.1. Green Rock Trail2. Pickle Springs Natural Area - Trail Through Time3. Pere Marquette State Park4. Hawn State Park

This is our go-to book for choosing hikes within the St. Louis area. Originally checked it out from the library and used it so often we bought the updated version on Amazon. There are a variety of hikes listed for hikers of all skill level. Makes you appreciate all the beauty this area has to offerUPDATE: I've now owned this book for a bit and have had a chance to really utilize it. The descriptions for the hikes are pretty accurate considering when the last update was and now. I have found a few of the areas to have additional hikes or some of the trails that once had generic names have been named. These are minor details though. Directions listed to get to the trailheads, parks, natural areas and conservation areas are accurate. In some cases, they are better to use than your GPS.I like to make notes after I hike a trail or an area, so I do wish there was a blank page or two included with each chapter so that trail and area notes could be made. In addition, when the book is updated, it would be great to have a website or something online linked to the book.I still consider this the best hiking book for the St. Louis and surrounding areas. If you live in the STL area and love hiking, this is a must have for your collection or anyone you know who loves to hike. It's given me an appreciation for where I live and what the area has to offer.Please note, I have updated my star rating to a 4 from a 5 due to some of the things I wish were different about the book.

We have used the older version of this book many times over the years. We misplaced it, and I got my husband this new edition for Christmas. I'm sure this one will get lots of use as well.

Lots of the right kind of details.

This book is a great resource for those in the Saint Louis area. I've been hiking around this area for 15-20 years and still hadn't known about many of the hikes listed in this guide. It covers all the classic spots around here, but has some more obscure ones too. Of course, the 60 miles thing is a bit of a stretch, but most of the further ones are well worth the drive. Best regional hiking resource I've found.

If you live in the St. Louis area and enjoying hiking, this is a must-have book. Very useful tips about various trails (terrain, difficulty, maps, views, seasonality, etc.). I've enjoyed a lot of trails that I never would have known about without this book. Highly recommend!

Great descriptions and info. I appreciate that it includes addresses and websites for some parks - makes it easy to look up driving directions and more info. online when needed. I have selected several hikes for my Webelos scouts with the help of this book.

Eugene H. Peterson opens his book with an overwhelming introduction that both captured me and also struck fear into my heart. I had read the introduction before, yet had not pressed farther into the book. Yet recently was challenged to revisit this book to face the challenges of Peterson's book and seek the Holy Spirit's work in my life. After completing Working the Angles, I found there were three specific areas where I received the greatest challenges; prayer, contemplative exegesis, and Sabbath.Having spent the last three years in fulltime work in the Church, Working the Angles, was a good challenge to return to the perspective, practice, and discipline I began those years doing. His words and emotional force cut into my heart with the realization of how little energy and importance I now (and perhaps always) have put on prayer. Most striking, however, was the call to the realization of what prayer really is:"Prayer is a daring venture into speech that juxtaposes our words with the sharply alive words that pierce and divide souls and spirit, joints and marrow, pitilessly exposing every thought and intention of the heart (Heb. 4:12-13; Rev. 1:16) (Peterson 1998, 43)."I had definitely fallen back into a bland routine of praying. I neither was considering Who I was actually communing with or the gravity of my prayers. The sections dealing with prayer in this book have been quite restorative in even helping me to slow down in my prayer and seek God. His words to Pastors on "little prayers" offered at the start of an event or function have also pressed my heart to not take lightly the moments we pray prior to the start of class, chapel, a meal, or bedtime with the children.The second of area of challenge that I found of great benefit was that of contemplative exegesis. He uses a striking illustration from Herman Melville's novel White Jacket to tell how we might get carried away with the technical skills of our life's calling to the actual defeat of what we are striving to accomplish. Already this term I have found this true as we bury deep in research, reading, study, and writing. It is easy for me to strive to read all the texts, gather data, or compose papers and sermons, but to do so devoid of the life found in God's word. Again Working the Angles has been a siren call away from the shoals of academic and scholarly success that could easily end in break up spiritual well being. Prayer and re-realization of a God Who is alive and speaking through His word has been a breath of fresh air.Finally, Peterson's discussion of Sabbath presses upon my heart. I have been struggling to find both rest and Sabbath. Each day I feel the pressure of deadlines and responsibilities, while the tension of family and Church ministry expectations hound my thoughts. Peterson reflections on the Hebrew morning and evening concepts, I pray, will continue to shape my perspective of Who is really at work in my life. He also helped me to re-think what a real Sabbath means and I am seeking to implement a weekly time that restores my perspective on the reality of God, His sovereignty in my life, and healthy disciplines moving forward.

The power, longevity and effectiveness of a church lies in large part on the leadership of its pastor(s). It shouldn't be about his or her administrative skills or ability to jump at every whim a member of the congregation brings forward. It should be about the spiritual life and leadership of the pastor. This isn't about perfection. It's about relationship with God. As a lay person who is active in the local church and works in a ministry to pastors, my heart delights in a pastor who puts God first and everything else in its proper place. You see, when the pastor's hunger for God is alive and well and being fed I can see it, and I have a role model to follow. When the pastor's life demonstrates the results of intimacy with Christ, I am motivated and encouraged.As a lay person, I was brought up short because for too long I have measured my pastors by the to do list he accomplishes and the teaching she does. I have not always allowed them the space to do the most important things - being the guardian and teacher of the word and sacrament, abiding in Christ through prayer, and being the spiritual director I need rather than the quick answer to a problem I bring forward. I stand corrected.My hope is that this book crosses the desk of every pastor in America, to renew his or her call to ministry, to give permission and encouragement in keeping the promises of ordination and installation. It will radically change the pastorate and the Church it ministers to.Well done, Pastor Peterson. Thank you for your honesty, your leadership, and your willingness to be real and tell it like it is.

This is a marvelous writer who has walked the talk of a pastor of integrity. I remember reading his "Five Smooth Stones" in sem and marveling over the wisdom this man wordsmiths so succinctly for the rest of us to consume and feed on.So it continues with this account of what angles really a pastor is about: prayer, the Word and spritual direction. Acts 6:4 certainly prescribes to Peterson's analysis as well.This is a direct challenge to the CEO mentality in the church today. Marketing the church has taken over in too many places. The necessary corrective is offered here. As he poignantly writes: "This isn't the only task in the life of faith, but it is your task. We will find someone else to do the other important and essential tasks. This is yours: word and sacrament." Amen.

Eugene Peterson is my all time favorite theologian. This is a fascinating look at the profession of the pastorate but for any 'lay' pastor such as myself it fits just as well. Great insights and of course erudite presentation of ideas.

Always a good review of the vital role of the clergy in the service of the church.....these are activities mentioned by E. Peterson from which a clergyman receives no remuneration, but all clergy are to do these three activities.

I read all the reviews before purchasing and some said they were disappointed with the fact the book was missing pieces of the story. Honestly for a baby/toddler it is perfect. Get the full version when they get old but in the meantime it's a great buy. These books are excellent few words and plenty pictures for babies and toddlers. Hard cover makes it easy for them to turn, very cute and small to carry any and everywhere.

I grew up reading Dr. Seuss, among other children's authors. I had fond memories of that, so I bought this set for my child who was turning 1. I wish I had realized how much garbage that Dr. Seuss had written. Of the set, there is only one truly good book: "Oh the Thinks You Can Think." The worst of the bunch is "Ten Apples up on Top." I actually had to hide that one because it sucks so bad. It's a terrible book and I regret subjecting a developing brain to it. I mean, if you're going to write literary nonsense, can you at least make it good?The books are durable and stand up to a one-year-old playing with them, stepping on them, looking at them, and handing them to adults to read. If only the contents of the books were as good of quality as the material they are printed upon!So if you want only one good book to read out of the whole set, then buy it. If not, then give your child the instruction manual for your TV set. At least it will be better written than "10 Apples up on Top."

We bought this intending as a back up present that ended sitting around until our child was born. So we ended up keeping it and our child loves it. The books aren’t the most recognizable Dr. Seuss books but we still have fun reading them. We use the container to store our son’s Dr. Seuss flashcards we bought separately. He loves carrying the box around like a mini suitcase.

I love them for my 2 year old they are perfect size and thickness for the amount that I paid for them thanks again amazon

These books are very small and kind of disappointing. Perhaps our 2 1/2 year old grandchild is too old for them, but the Dr. Seuss wit is timeless. I did have to purchase other books that were larger for her to take to pre-school in order to share illustrations with the children.

Very nice little books. These are smaller than the regular ones which is fine for little kids. The pages are thick cardboard for those just learning to care for books. Come in a nice little carrying case.

I bought two of these box sets and they are ok. I enjoy reading the Ten Apples Up On Top book and the Oh, The Thinks You Can Think book. The Shape of Me and Other Stuff is ok but I do not like the Hop on Pop as i just don't like the reading flow. But still the set is ok. These DO NOT work well for a young child who likes putting everything in their mouth. The board book pages will pretty much disintegrate when wet so be aware of that. My little teether took out the whole bottom of the bonded part VERY quickly! We can still use the book but I don't let him play with them when we aren't reading them.
