I recently bought an Isuzu, but found out later that Haynes had stopped publishing repair manuals for Isuzu years ago. Like many, I have been using Haynes as my preferred manuals for car repairs. Haynes' simple, easy to read, and picture-laden books are popular with many because they help make sometimes difficult repairs manageable.I was surprised when I found Amazon carried a manual for my Isuzu. Apprehensive, too, however, about buying a Chilton's book: My experiences with Chilton books were terse and sometimes convoluted steps of repair. I had difficulty understanding and, thus, getting my repair completed. Professional mechanics swear to Chilton's, I swore at them.Desperate, I bought the Chilton's Isuzu manual and, to my surprise, found it refreshingly easy to read. I later found out the book is indeed printed by Chilton/Haynes. So I know I was in for familiar reading. Once opened, the book's chapters are easy reference and the many photos and graphics make it a sure bet for shade tree mechanics and weekend do-it-yourselfers alike.The manual covers Isuzu:AMIGOPick Up (P'uP)RODEOTROOPER (BIG HORN)All Isuzu/GM motors used during these years, including 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.3, 2.6, 2.8, 3.1, and 3.2 liter motors to include diesel variants. Skips some years in some procedures and complex sequences are not entirely clear. I agree 1998 and the valve cover removal is not described, which is an incredibly overcomplicated process for something that could be pretty simple, but that's the design and not the books fault. Because the book covers a large range of years, they either overlooked some years, misstated the years, or simply omitted for lack of room.
A friend gave my son his 1992 Isuzu Trooper. Even though we don't do major mechanical repairs, this book is a terrific help when we need to trouble shoot issues. For easy things we rely on this book to make the fixes but for more major repairs we at least have some background enabling us to better describe and discuss repairs with our mechanic. A must have in you own an old Isuzu.
It’s good for firestarter
During my 37 years of driving I have probably owned a dozen repair manuals, most of which rated 3 to 4 stars. This Chilton's manual barely makes a 2. It covers too many years and models to cover more than the most rudimentary maintenance in any depth; there are too few illustrations; and it does not contain one exploded view of my 3.2L Trooper engine. There are parts on this engine that cannot be even found in this manual! Let's hope Haynes publishes one soon.
If you do your own auto work, a shop manual is WELL WORTH the price. It provides specifications that you'll not find online or anywhere else. Back 40 years ago, you find them at the local Library. But with SO MANY models on the roads now, they cannot keep up, IF, you are going to do more than change oil & filters, buy one.
